New to the group looking to find some information CKD stage 2 from stage 3.
There is a lot of information available on the web about diet. Have you asked about seeing a Dietitian. A Health Coach may be able to help you set SMART goals for lowering sodium in diet, plus exercise to lose weight.
Hi Linda,
Welcome! You have come to a community of great folks who are both knowledgeable and supportive. Happy to have you!
In regard to your question; my thoughts are the first line of communication should be with your doctor's. Put together a medical team who will communicate openly with both you and each other; that is very important.
Ask your Rheumatologist about alternatives for pain and reduction of inflammation as the NASID's are not good for either the kidneys or liver.
Bring a rough copy of what you have been eating and discuss it with them and ask for suggestions. Additionally, bring a copy of your labs to each appointment to monitor various electrolytes and protein.
Remember that every patient is different and has different nutritional needs based on labs.
If you can get a referral to a renal dietician or the dietician who handles kidney and RA and OA patients in your area, that would be great! Davita also holds a free Smart Class which would be worthwhile attending if you can.
In regard to foods. Key points for kidney patients are low sodium; 1500-2000mg daily. Low protein especially eliminating red meats and such foods as cold cuts, bacon, sausage as they are high in sodium. Egg whites, chicken and fish as tilapia are better choices.
Keep an eye on your potassium and phosphate intakes, which is where the Davita food tracker and a nutritionist can help.
Eat a diet rich in fresh or frozen vegetables and fresh
fruits such as strawberries, blueberries and apples.
Cream of Wheat is also good for kidney patients as it is high in iron.
Become a label reader.
Be aware that potatoes and tomatoes are high in potassium and may not be great for you.
Drink water as much as possible and avoid dark sodas.
Honestly, it's a lifestyle not a diet.
Since going more plant based I have done really well and have never felt better. Additionally, since making the changes that I have, both my husband and I have both lost weight.
It is all a process.
Below are two articles which may give you some ideas; one is on foods the other eating out.
