Hello Mannyboy17

Thank you for your message. Could you tell us more about your situation and the back ground to your concern about a shrinking kidney?

There can be multiple causes of a shrinking kidney, including kidney stones and infections.

What advice did the doctors give after the ultrasound?

It might be important to follow a healthy diet and lifestyle.

15yrs ago i peed blood. Went to a urologist and prescribed meds for the stones.. 4yrs after another occurance stones are huge needs open surgery. But only to fount out that my heart has 4 blocked veins. So saved some money and i went to a quadruple bypass operation 10yrs ago. It went well.. then following yr left kidney was opened for huge stones.. another yr then right kidney was opened for huge stones. So from there my crea bounced from 1.8-2.1 until recently last september 07 ultrasound shows 1kidney was shrinking. Then a small stone around .3 of a cm. So they said can take meds for that stone.. nephrologist changed all current meds to new ones then will be back by nov 22 for another lab and consultation. My current crea now is 2.46. Im 67 and i dont want to go on dialysis. I have 1 child. A daughter whom just gave birth last april. I hope god will spare me a few more good years without dialysis.

You need to discuss this further with your nephrologist. As the nurse suggested, your shrinking kidneys could be due to your history of kidney stones. But only your doctor could confirm this. I know you mentioned an ultrasound, but has your nephrologist suggested a kidney biopsy?

I have had a transplant and my "native" kidneys have shrunk to the size of a golf ball. My shrinking kidneys is due to FSGS. For me, this was confirmed by a biopsy.

I’m curious as well. I’m waiting to speak to my nephrologist about this. I just had a ultrasound and noticed over the past three ultrasounds in the last 2years my kidneys have shrunk 2cm. I’m confused as my GFR has risen to the mid 70s and proteinuria has been controlled for almost a year now. Never had kidney stones. The cysts I have on my kidneys have not grown and they are few. I have IGAN not poly cystic so don’t think that’s the issue. I’m at a loss.
