When I was first diagnosed 12years ago I was refered to a area office for diabetics and they took care of controlling and treating my diabetes and when my sugers were settled I was sent back to my GP for monitoring,this all happend quite quickly.I gather from many posts on this site I am very fortunate with my doctors
If it was me I would be jumping for joy because you can do something about T2 . T1 is much different. Work hard & you can do wonders! Good luck.
