Something weird happening

Over the last week I have to lower my insulin on a daily basis due to hypos. Now I no longer taking Novorapid at all!!! Still taking Lantus as normal.

Now, I should say that I only eat once a day and have done for donkey's years so this is nothing new but I did have the flu two weeks ago and I am still recovering from it.

I have not made any drastic changes to my diet. I eat clean and seasonally.

Any ideas from you good folks out there?

  • The results of the flu might be part of the hypo numbers and also the decrease of insulin doses. What did your doctor say about the issue?

  • I havn't been to the doc yet. It's taking a while to get over the 'flu and since I picked it up at the docs in the first place I am waiting until I feel better. I might make an appointment on Monday though.

  • Please call them and tell them that you want to be seen right away since you're diabetic. Please let us know what you find out.

    Lada and type 1 is caused due to the destruction of beta cells. But how does it occur ? By autoantibodies. How ? It's postulated that an infection - most probably a viral infection ?flu causes these autoantibodies to be produced due to antigenic similarities between the virus and beta cells. So flu is not a good infection for anybody.

  • Good for you. Flu would make you have high BG. I have a mate who is now off Insulin for his T2. Sensible eating is a VERY good way to get this sorted. Well done!

  • As said well done for eating well. When you had Flu your BG would be high, When you got rid of it your body will be working better & your pancreas may have recovered a bit. T2 pancreases could work 20% or 80%. T1 it does not work. So be very thankful for the improvement!

  • I was having the same problem a few weeks ago. I even posted a weird post about maybe my diabetes was gone. I was able to go for three days with normal blood sugar (without using insulin) even when eating 100 grams of carbs at a time. Then all of a sudden my body stopped working again and my insulin resistance went back up high again. Now I am back to taking 16-17 units of fast acting insulin per every 100 grams of carbs I eat, and my BG will only hit 116 on the 2 hour mark, and back under a hundred on the 3-4 hour mark. I have not had any hypos either since the hypos I had that made me stop taking insulin for three days a few weeks back. I don't know what happens, but sometimes my pancreas kicks in and starts working good again for a while. Then it stops working again. I'm a Type 2 diabetic treating my diabetes like a Type 1. I do not require long acting or intermediate insulin, as my BG stays under control in between meals. I only need a boost of insulin for post prandial BG spikes. For the most part I only eat once a day because I hate worrying about hypos. But this week I have been eating twice a day as I was sick for two weeks and lost a lot of weight. All of this has to do with hormones and sometimes we become more sensitive to the effects of insulin. When I first started insulin, I used to have to inject 1 unit of insulin for every 4 grams of carbs. Then it got better. I was only injecting 1 unit for every 10 grams of carbs. This went on for many months. Now I'm back to injecting 1 unit for every 4 grams of carbs again. I can't explain it. All I can do is test regularly and adjust accordingly. I'll take low BG over high BG any day, but even low BG can cause damage. I'm always prepared for the hypos though with candy I take with me just in case. Hang in there. You will get it all figured out.

  • I don't eat clean. I'm a foodie. What I have done is limit the amount of food intake. I don't always eat 100 grams of carbs per meal. Mostly it is 50-100 grams of carbs per day. Every now and then (maybe 5 times a month) I eat some sweets. After all, I'm only human. I love food. But overall I only eat less than half of what I used to eat before I was diagnosed. I have noticed too that since starting insulin and keeping my BG under control (my 14 day average BG is 110) my appetite went away. I used to crave foods day and night and had an insatiable appetite. Now I can go on 1 good meal a day (usually under 1500 calories) and not be hungry. I only get food cravings when my BG goes low. I eat one meal a day and also use intermittent fasting to give my pancreas a break. I just can't give up breads and pasta, so I limit the amount I can eat.

  • Doc seems to think that because I've been ill I may have been just been picking at my meals. I don't think I have but I will try eating a bit more and see what happens. My bg was a bit on the high side this morning so maybe it is just diabetes being diabetes !??!
