HbA1c testing

I have a fasting HbA1c test each year as part on my T2 check up. My wife's GP wanted a series of blood test for her and her HbA1c was non fasting. Do fasting and non fasting tests give the same results. I assume that my fasting test is to get a separate result from the HbA1c.

HbA1c test can be done while fasting or after food. The test gives the result of average BS level during past about three months and not as at a point of time.

Thank you. Presumably that is a better test than a fasting one that could quite possibly vary from day to day.

A1C test should be done every 3 months - non fasting okay

My doctors surgery has a thing about fasting and ask for no food for 14 hours before.

I was sent away once as I had only fasted for 10 hours.. Another time I had Green Tea and was told that was not allowed.

Okay -- you are not in USA -- follow your doctors advise -

They seem to be the only surgery with that rule. The hospital say 10 hours when it has been done there.

Usually cholesterol test at the same time and again some say no need to fast for that either.

No need for fasting for HBA1C....

No special preparation is needed. The food you have recently eaten does not affect the A1C test, so you do not need to fast to prepare for this blood test.

there may be no significant change between FB and PP blood sample for HBA1c, since it is only a reflection of your last quarterly Blood sugar average.
