First of all, your target HbA1c should be 6% or lower.

There are wide varieties of ingredients you an use in LCHF diet depending on your choice and taste. Overall, the diet would be low in carbohydrate, moderate in protein and high in healthy fat. Following are examples of the main ingredients you can use to prepare LCHF diets:

1. Eggs, Meat, Fish

2.Dairy: Full fat yoghurt ( Greek yoghurt), Full fat cheese, Paneer, Heavy cream

3. Non-starchy green vegetables.

4. Nuts and seeds: Walnuts, Pecans, Almonds, Chia seeds. Flax seeds.

5. Added fat: Extra virgin olive oil, Butter, virgin coconut oil.

Will it satisfy lchf criteria if we make our food, nuts (almonds, walnuts, cashews) only food skipping or minimizing everything else ?

Praveen55 profile image
Praveen55Moderator in reply to vyas123

Any particular reason for such a restrictive choice? What is the point of satisfying lchf criteria if it can not provide all nutrients that body needs? Moreover, can one sustain for long on a diet using three nuts that you have mentioned?

vyas123 profile image
vyas123 in reply to Praveen55

Easy to remember and easy to follow, easy to eat and like them most and satisfy hunger too efficiently. Do you mean, if we follow lchf, it will not satisfy nutrition needs? If we follow lchf, will it be difficult to sustain for long? Sorry for my low knowledge about lchf.

Your question is not about lchf. It is about living off nuts (almonds, walnuts, cashews) and you have already answered yourself. It suits you.

Eating is a personal choice, you have to ask yourself what food you will like and what you will not. No one else can answer this for you. And you should also check if you meet your body's nutritional requirements whatever diets you take.

I always prefer to include varieties of food. I can not imagine myself eating nuts all the time. Is it really so difficult to remember eating vegetables or dairy if one likes eating? Good luck.

No, it is about lchf only. Per my undertstanding lchf is good to follow for diabetics. My thinking was if nuts satsfy lchf, thought nuts can be maximized in my food as much as I can. Are vegetables part of lchf food? Is lchf itself not complete food?

1. LCHF is indeed very good approach to follow for diabetes. As you are aware, there are many members in our group who have benefited from this approach.

2. Nuts are also very healthy choice for LCHF, no doubt about that.

3.Now the last part of your question '' Are vegetables part of lchf food? Is lchf itself not complete food?''

LCHF is a dietary approach which in general calls for low carb, moderate protein and high healthy fat as per individuals requirements. Whether LCHF is complete food or not depends on what one includes in the diet. Our body needs macro-nutrients and micro-nutrients. We must make sure that we get all from our food. No one food may provide all. That is why it is good to include varieties of ingredients in our diet including LCHF.

As an extreme example, let us assume 300 gm almonds( nut) may fulfil the daily energy requirements of a particular person providing:

a. 1728 calories

b. 147 gm fat

c. 63 gm protein

d. 30 gm net carb

Based on macros, the above is an excellent LCHF/KETO diet. However, one has to find out if our body's requirements of essentials vitamins and minerals, essential fatty acids, complete protein etc will be supplied by consuming Almonds alone.

In general, non-starchy vegetables are included in LCHF diets because they are low carb and provide several vitamins and minerals. Based on that, I will say vegetables are part of LCHF in practical terms.

I suggest, you should talk to a dietician or a suitable health professional who will be able to advice you on a complete diet which meets LCHF requirements and also provides essential vitamins and minerals that we need. Sometime, we may have to consider some supplements. That would be a safe approach.

Thanks for the info/opinion/advise. Do you think doctors will be of help if we like to go with lchf food. Conventional doctors I thought won't advise lchf for BP+Diabetic (also hypo thyroid in my case) patients.

In general, BP and BS drop on lchf diet. I agree with you that many Doctors do not support LCHF way of eating. However, with the popularity of LCHF/KETO, there are many who do support. You have to find one that supports. I know it may be difficult depending on where you live.

Low carb lifestyle has been quite beneficial for many. Here in the UK, there are over 380,000 members in'Low Carb Programme' run by diabetes.co.uk to resolve diabetes, pre-diabetes and obesity. I understand that it has been quite successful according to the results achieved.

Use your own judgement and assess the suitability of any diet that you wish to follow. If you have any specific question, let us know. We will assist you in whatever way we can.

I posted a mail saying that meat is not safe right now for any patient because of the poisons introduced in to the bodies of animals through steroids and hormone injections indiscriminately . It is a fact but clinical evidence is not available . If any research organisation undertakes that job truth will come out . That mail got rejected . That's why I wanted to bring out the fact to your notice as you are a volunteer .

ok , Sorry please . But it is not a flippant comment . It is a genuine question asked to find out the reason . If members are not allowed to express genuine concerns but just allowed to express their opinions / recommendations generated by the feed back from so called haphazard scientific studies , there is no point in coming to forums expecting some useful tips regarding health issues especially diabetes a life style disorder and not a disease . They can as well go to You tube or wickiepedia .

I was referring to this comment of yours:

So , if any post is not of your liking it is deleted .

If we the admin deleted posts that weren't of 'our' liking HU would delete us, we all comply with HU rules and we respect one another's opinions, sometimes members don't explain their point well or it is misinterpreted.

I stepped in as I thought this was getting heated and Praven55 is a trusted volunteer and is being courteous to you.

Much better to eat what is right for you, no diet works for everyone - every body is different - different exercises, sleep patterns, work, size, shape - how can one diet possibly work or be right for everyone - doesn't make any sense!

vyas123 profile image
vyas123 in reply to Cann

How to know what is right for me?

Cann profile image
Cann in reply to vyas123

This is a difficult one, but for me I use kinesiology or muscle testing taught to me by a kinesiologist when I was seriously ill and given little hope of living very long by the conventional doctors.

I really wanted to live and get well and I sought out people recommended to me by those who had done the same - healed themselves.

Many use dowsing, but that didn't work for me, but it works for many.

I trust my body and muscles to tell me what is right for me. It has been used by thousands for thousands of years and, for me, is much more reliable than the drugs doctors prescribed for me (which actually nearly killed me due to allergies which they had no means or chose not to test before prescribing dangerous drugs to me).

If I were you, I would do the same - seek out knowledgeable people and only go with those you trust, but it is your decision. We are all responsible for our own health in the end.

It is easy to tell when you meet someone if they are right or not, or it is for me. I am very sensitive and I can tell if they are going to help me or not.

If I ate a diet that someone else told me to eat, I would be dead now, that is why the kinesiologist taught me to test myself.

She was testing me for a while, but she said that I needed to test everything I ingested or drank before doing so and she was right.

She could not be with me all the time and the body changes all the time.

I am so much better now, but I still don't eat or drink without testing or else I get a flare of some sort. My immune system was messed up by what happened to me in hospital.

Can you please call your doctor to set up an appointment to discuss what type of diet and exercise routine would be best for you personally? Once you see the doctor, you can ask him/her about counting carbs. so the blood sugars are under control. :-)

Doctors are in general, not lchf supports/compliant. My understanding and experience is doctors will not be of help if we like to go for lchf on the basis of people' experience in this forum.

There are some doctors that will be willing to help with LCHF diet plans if the patient doesn’t go too low carb..😀👍

This may all be in the ideal situation, but every life is lived differently and everyone has different experiences. I was told in hospital many years ago that I have a very long bowel. A therapist told me that I need to eat little and often as I am a 'grazer' and that is the way I stay healthy. If I can't do that I get sick. I know my body. No one knows everything about what someone else should eat.

Cann profile image
Cann

I don't need sympathy, I just need others to understand that we are all different and we need to eat what is right for us and healthily, of course.

I eat only whole food prepared by myself and organic when I can source it. Diets haven't been tested long term and eating a balanced diet is far more effective for health.

Activity2004 profile image
Activity2004Administrator in reply to Cann

Cann ,

Yes, you're right. Not all diets are the same and may not work for everyone. Each person has to first talk to a doctor and see if the doctor would agree if a certain diet may/may not work for that patient before trying it.

Cann profile image
Cann in reply to Activity2004

Doctors had actually given me little hope 18 years ago until I found a kinesiologist who taught me to muscle test myself for what I eat and drink.

I was 5 stone 10 lbs at that time and no-one thought I would survive. This was after surgery and drugs that almost killed me.

Once I started muscle testing myself and eating what rendered my muscles strong instead of weak, I started to get better and put on weight.

It wasn't doctors, though I saw many and even paid privately for help. They could only suggest hospital on a drip.

I felt they could kill me if I went back in after all the damage that had been done to me, already.

It has left me with immune system problems, but as long as I eat what is right for me, I am managing it all.

My doctors know how I eat and they all say stick with it if it works for you. Other than that I have had no help from doctors and I can't take the drugs and the ingredients in them that they have prescribed.

I live this way to survive and enjoy my life.

If I could find a doctor that understands nutrition I might listen to them, but few know that much and there is no point talking to them about it. They only do one session in seven years training on nutrition, my GP once told me and apologised for advising me to eat marmite and stakes when I was seriously ill.

The drugs had caused a serious fungal infection and the marmite aggravated it enormously having yeast in it.

As for the stakes, my digestive system was so impaired by the drugs and surgery that I could not digest a stake - that nearly finished me off at the time.

Hopefully, you will now understand why I don't consult my doctor about what to eat.

Digestion is so complicated - it is not only what one eats, but what one digests or can digest, absorb and assimilate.

Experience is a great teacher and I have certainly experienced a great deal!

Activity2004 profile image
Activity2004Administrator in reply to Cann

I understand completely what you mean by issues with digestion. I have been on digestive enzymes for most of my life. If I don’t use them for certain foods, then they won’t digest and I will have cramps because the food won’t go anywhere after eating it. I’m 38 years old and I started the digestive enzymes when I was 2 weeks old as an infant after two surgeries.

Cann profile image
Cann in reply to Activity2004

Good you can use them and they work for you. I haven't found any that work for me, don't know why, but my body doesn't seem to know what to do with them - crazy, I know, but I have to accept and eat what I can digest, hoping all the time, things will improve and they have slowly - have to keep positive!

Yes .one should eat what is suitable to him/her . Meat should not be taken too much . When it is getting digested a chemical known as TMAO is released .If the levels of TMAO go up there is every possibility of getting strokes and heart attacks as per one study done recently . So we should not just go blindly on any recommendation . It s a personal need based choice .Though red meat is said to be the culprit , one does not know what new research would state after six months . TMAO is gut generated chemical Trimethylamine N_Oxide . It is formed by gut bacteria during the process of digestion of red meat . It is said digestion of red meat creates three times more of that when compared to plant proteins . But how and to what extent and whether white meat also equally produces is not yet established .

Cann profile image
Cann in reply to

That is interesting because I cannot take much animal protein and I am always uncomfortable after any meat. My diet is mainly plant based, but I need some high protein occasionally which I find out what by muscle testing. Rarely red meat, rarely chicken, some turkey, but not much.

in reply to Cann

Plant based protein is the best in cases like yours .

Cann profile image
Cann in reply to

Yes, I think it is from my experience over the past 18 years. It is just occasionally I feel I need some high protein. Today chickpeas, almonds and bananas as my protein. I trust the muscle testing because without it, I really would not know what to eat!

Thri profile image
Thri in reply to Cann

what is muscle testing and how is it done?

Cann profile image
Cann in reply to Thri

It is a very ancient way of testing the body muscle strength rather than relying on trial and error as our conventional system does.

I place a food, drink, supplements or whatever even drugs on my navel and then test with certain fingers and positive statements to see if my muscles are strong or weak - never yes or no, but 'my body needs this food now or my body needs this later or my body can take this whatever.

It is where one gets in touch with ones own autonomic nervous system and subconscious or higher more knowledgeable self.

Our bodies want to heal themselves and they know how to do it. Sadly, many of us have become disconnected from our bodies in this very unnatural world that we live in now.

Cann profile image
Cann in reply to Thri

PS There are many different ways of testing, but I use Hashimoto's muscle test.

Cann profile image
Cann

It may be a common practice, but it makes sense to me because so much energy goes into digestion - something like a third of our energy and to digest a big meal often sends people to snooze!

With a long and coiled bowel it makes sense that to eat a big meal would take a long time for it to go through the intestines and colon and that is no good thing either. It is all about getting to know your own body. After all, we have to live with it; others and doctors don't!

Activity2004 profile image
