Use the search function on this web page about karela. There are plenty of earlier posts on this subject.
Adding sugar / jaggery to karella raises bs.Also what else is eaten with is important. Karella itself can't raise bs.
You must have eaten something along with Kerala which is responsible for increasing your blood sugar levels.
Because of the oil used in preparing Karela sabzi your sugar may be getting high. Take juice of raw karela you will have amazing results.
Raw karela is supposed to lower blood sugar because of the following reasons:
1. It has a polypeptide-P molecule which is like insulin and hence it is supposed to lower blood sugar.
2. It has also other compounds such as charatin and momordicin which are also known to lower blood sugar.
However, since you have eaten sabji which might involve heating and boiling to high temperatures and in this process, these molecules can get denatured and lose their activity. Karela is not a substitute for medicine but aids as a supplement to help lower blood sugar. The increase that you observed could be due to other factors such as some food which is a carbohydrate. Karela is best taken in the form of juice rather than as a sabji to see its effect. I have been taking karela juice twice a week in addition to medicines. Although I also observed that there is no significant decrease in post-prandial blood sugar sometimes but sometimes I observed a decrease in ppbs. In general it seems to help in lowering blood sugar to some extent although not very much. So, I suggest that you try karela juice in addition to medicines, you might observe that karela juice helps as a supplement to further lower blood sugar. There are many you tube videos which demonstrate how to prepare karela juice. It will taste good if you add some ginger and lemon.
One final word. Since human body is complex, it is difficult to conclude anything on the basis of one observation. You have to try for several days to investigate the effect of karela on blood sugar.
