Mitochondrial dysfunction is a primary cause of age-related decline.1-7 In a revealing study, a team of researchers showed that muscle tissue of a 90-year-old man contained 95% damaged mitochondria compared to almost no damage in that of a 5-year-old.8

When one looks at the boundless energy of a child compared to an elderly person, the devastating impact of mitochondrial degradation become instantly apparent. A myriad of recent scientific reports link defective and deficient mitochondria to virtually all degenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s, type 2 diabetes, heart failure, and cancer.9-13

With regard to cancer the focus is shifting from damaged DNA being causal to damaged mitochondria.

There is an alternative to looking for a supplement to change the dynamic. Why not clear out old and damaged mitochondria? It will cost nothing and is simple to do:

Fast!

Wonderful things happen when you fast, one of which is HGH (human growth hormone) shoots up to protect muscle and the bigger effect is autophagy. Basically a mechanism is initiated whereby damaged and junk DNA, viruses, bacteria is sent for recycling.

Lots of information on youtube, but here's a sub 3 minute example.

Interested in fasting - research Jason Fung.

IIRC, Dr. Jason Fung did respond to a question on this study on one of the forums. Let me dig out the link.

BTW, just check the comments on this article. :)

Yes.... it is all confusing.....

Now I am reading about how metformin is damaging mitochondria...

This "research" is contrary to everything I have read about IF. I wonder why they did not conduct this experiment on humans.

This is about drugs which affects mitochondrial function.

well.....we really don't know....but it is everywhere....

Adopting a philosophy of self-experimentation can make a tremendous difference in your life.

हंस श्वेतः बकः श्वेतः । को भेदो बक हंसयोः ?

नीर क्षीर विवेके तु । हंसो हंसः बको बकः !

A swan is white, a stork is white. What's the difference between the swan and the stork? When it comes to separate the water from milk, a swan is a swan and a stork is a stork.( It is considered by Sanskrit poets that swan has some mystical power to separate milk from water which is called Nir=water kshir=milk vivek = wisdom)

IF is good for purging the present mitochondria....

where as PQQ is to get brand new mitochondria

.......But the most exciting revelation on PQQ emerged early in 2010, when researchers found it not only protected mitochondria from oxidative damage—it also stimulated growth of new mitochondria!14......

karch

And on day of fast we should not eat sabudana khichadi/potato/sweet potato....or any other high carb items....

Fast should be with just pure lemon and water.

karch profile image
karch in reply to cure

the concept of fasting was good and simple originally ...absolutely no grains/salt ...eating once/twice in day ...and fruits etc minimal ...I think if we just start the same ...health will make a come back ...

Gujratis fast like this : they eat nothing in day time and in night they take one full meal ...thats also a kind of intermittent fasting

I think one of the reason we lost our health is that we left behind all these kind of healthy traditions of fasting ...

Hmmm yes...saturday is good for tirupatu balajee....

But at Tirupati....they have mahapuja of friday instead of saturday....

Further...as karch said...tuesday for hanumanjee.....there is again...in Maharashtra tueday is considered day for Durga/devi....not for Hanumanjee... and saturday is considered for Hanumanjee by maharashtrians...

Monday for shivjee

Tesday and friday for Goddess

Thursday for Dattatreya/sai baba

saturday for hanumanjee...

and sunday for celebration for non veg party ;)

karch profile image
karch in reply to cure

lets start with Tuesday ...how about that one meal(LCHF based and grainless) in a day ...so that body may not feel shock suddenly being deprived from food

Atleast we will remain grainless for a day in a week

cure profile image
cureAdministrator in reply to karch

karch well i was reading about mistakes ppl do with IF.... they say when u fast....it is expected that your calories should be cut down....

But if suppose generally you consume 2000 cal diet....and on IF....and u take one full meal of 2000 cal.....then your calories will remain same.....

Its all about calories restriction.....

But hmmm bit confusion here.....in LCHF we do not count calories.... now how are we going to cut down/achieve calories deprivation???

karch profile image
karch in reply to cure

simple ...instead of eating 3 meals a day ...eat one grainless meatless/eggless general LCHF one meal that day ...that will address the problem of calorie restriction ...general meal/3 calories you will get on the day of fasting ...if you use less fat that that day in the meal you will probably get less calories than normal days as no meat/egg/grains and less fat, so from where you accumulate calories on fasting day ?? :)

shrisamarth profile image
shrisamarthVolunteer in reply to cure

"take one full meal of 2000 cal..."

Difficult to consume 2000 calories in a single meal.

Sunday ,of course all people celebrate and end up in diabetes .
