It is one of the top weight reducing, anti-obesity supplements in western countries. Dr Oz popularized it to some extent. Just google it up and read the oodles of literature on this. theseekingman has give us an impressive list of its benefits.... don't overeat it though ...  the other Garcinia called mangosteen is just as great.  The rind contains a biochemical that can help reduce BG, but the fruit itself is loaded with antioxidants and other goodies. Thanx to crass commercialization, it's become expensive. They did that to Noni, Manuka honey, Goji/Wolfberry, acai, etc... one of the ploys of capitalism is to seize, out of the blue, something somewhere on the globe with its the rapacious tentacles and then proclaim that it is some kind of superfruit or food. Next they 'll corner the market with its shameless multilevel scheming to fleece as many as possible.

It has antacid properties and sharbat made using kokam syrup is quite popular and refreshing in hot summer days. The skins of the fruit are treated with salt and dried called as "amsul" in Marathi. They are used in Maharashtrian cooking in certain curries and daal instead of using tamarind. The good part about kokam or amsul is that it is tart/ acidic in taste but it promotes alkalinity within the body and works as an antacid.

I don't think it has any particular added benefits to diabetics though.

Other word for Kokam is ratamba (रातांबा ).In kokan region of Maharashtra it is called ratamba.

Garcinia combogia is cousin of Kokam....It is promoted for weight reduction. However as side effect it reduces the size of testicles (Testicular Atrophy).

However there is no such effect is known for Garcinia Indica/ratamba/Amsul/kokam.

This is commonly used additive in Maharashtrian cuisine. Also as shrisamarthjee explained sol kadhi is very popular. Also sharbat.and dried rind.....

As per ayurveda it is considered as pittashamak.
