I was diagnosed with the following disease: DIAGNOSIS
Sigmoid colon biopsy:
- CHRONIC COLITIS.
- ABSENCE OF ASSOCIATED DYSPLASIA
I went to two specialists in the intestines, and one prescribed me mesalazine and the other escitalopram, is this really the treatment? I am concerned about sudden and gradual weight loss where I am not maintaining my weight and losing weight each week.
What should I do?

Mesalazine was the treatment I was first prescribed on my diagnosis of Ulcerative colitis. I had lost quite a bit of weight by the the time I had the colonoscopy. It’s easy to take and it did work. escitalopram is an anti depressant. Antidepressants are known to cause weight gain in many people, so maybe it would be okay to take for a short while, then reassess the situation.
Mesalazine is the first treatment for most of us - an anti-inflammatory drug. For me it wasn't enough to control symptoms so steroids were the next step, and now I'm on biologics. I guess you are losing weight because your digestive system is not absorbing nutrients as well as before your diagnosis. If you don't improve in a few weeks, go back to the gastro doctor.
