Microscopic colitis query

Hi all. I hope it’s ok to post here without a diagnosis?

I am diagnosed coeliac (extremely careful gf diet) and bile acid malabsorption (diagnosed by response to meds not sehcat scan). I continue to have extreme diarrhoea regularly which leaves me exhausted, feeling ill and losing weight. I also have good patches.

I also have autoimmune thyroid disease.

Just back from asking my gp if it was worth considering MC to which she replied “does lightening strike twice” and had I tried peppermint capsules … I would laugh if I wasn’t so exhausted with it all.

Am I right in thinking that being coeliac increases my chances of this being an answer?

Thanks in advance

Edited to add: can anyone recommend a private gastro consultant in Exeter/West Country. I’ve never gone private before but am getting desperate. Please private message if not appropriate to post here. Thank you

Hello Tilly, I believe there's an increased risk of getting MC if you are coeliac. But don't take my word for it, I'm not medically trained! Getting a diagnosis for colitis seems to be an uphill battle. You get fobbed off and patronized, it can take ages to get a firm and correct diagnosis. I don't want to seem negative but you must stand up for yourself, looking back I wish I had been more sure of myself. You will need a colonoscopy for a proper diagnosis. Mention this to your DR, or rather tell your DR. There's a waiting list for this procedure, but it needs doing, as there is very good medication to ease your symptoms. You don't have to suffer and worry needlessly, but you may have to be assertive. Good luck.

Thanks so much. I was fairly assertive (stroppy?) with the gp but still left feeling I’d been given the “Middle age woman with IBS” spiel. She eventually said she’d get me an appt with the colorectal nurses but I’m not really even sure how they will be able to help?I’m even considering going private and putting it on the mortgage 😱

I had decades of “just ibs” before the coeliac and BAM diagnoses. It was a struggle before covid - now even harder understandably.

Thanks again it’s nice to hear there’s even the possibility of treatment. Tilly X

Hi Tilly, I feel for you but I not sure celiac is connected to miro c, I have been suffering with this for 4yrs now I've had numerous test to see if it could be anything else but keeps coming back with same thing mc. I am presently on steriods for 3mths I can say maybe I am 30/0 better but I think whoever you go to see or pay to see will help you in the way you hope our conditions are apparently for life and there's things to help but not to cure, Hope you get on OK.

Thanks horseyrider - great name btw.

Yes, I'm not at all sure that I'm not grasping at straws...

And maybe a more helpful approach would be to try to adapt emotionally to the limitations our conditions bring to our lives.

I do struggle to do that - mainly because I hate the impact it has on our 12 year old, much as I try to hide it from her.

Thanks again
