Is Naproxen counter indicated for flare in Colitis?

Recently diagnosed Daughter abroad ….see earlier post….has been given Pantessa, a steroid and Naproxen. She still has diarrhoea and is very disheartened after after a week of the Naproxen . Should she stop ? She has lost a lot of weight as she’s worried about the consequences. She is seeing another (specialist in a few days.) I have read a few articles on the perils of Naproxen/ Colitis.

Your knowledge would be very helpful until she sees the apparently very good Doctor. Thank you.

That seems to be for heartburn/acid problems! Strange choice.

I think you may be saying she is on Naproxen Sodium (Aleve). If this it is the case, I have done the research too and it is a NO GO. It can actually cause flares. There are very targeted anti inflammatories that should be prescribed....which is the Pantessa! I can't be the the doctor here, but that's what I've read. Really the only pain med for colitis OTC .... would be tylenol.

Salazopyrin has kept my crohns in remission for many years. I take three when it’s good and with any signs I can add to a limit of 8. I’m very lucky it works for me. Pyrin is the actual drug. So long as that is at the end for the script.

As far as I know, Naproxen is an anti inflammatory painkiller which is in the group not suitable for people with IBD. It can make symptoms worse! We should only use paracetamol. Pentasa is a first-line treatment which many of us will have started on. If it doesn't control symptoms, the doctor will move onto steroids ( as she has been given) or immunosuppressants of some kind. It can take a while to find the right combination. Hope she improves soon.

I wouldn't touch naproxen with a finger, as it really can cause flairUps. The only thing I really take is paracetamol if needed. It is so important to get a IBD Team on your daughter. They know what can help. Most GP's have no clue about IBD and will give you something that isn't good for you.

Steroids are good for a short period of time. Long time isn't good. and please don't stop taking the steroids abruptly ever.

Never taken Pentasa, so can't tell you enough about it.

But as said, Naproxen isn't recommended for IBD at all, it can worsen it so badly.

Hope, your daughter get the right help soon. UK is the most advanced country for IBD, so if you get an IBD Team by your side, she will be good to go.
