New here... Any tips on coping with anxiety?

Does anyone have any tips on coping with anxiety caused by UC/IBD? I struggle at times, even when feeling healthy-ish, with anxiety that I'm suddenly going to need to find a toilet or risk having an accident. Have had colitis 10 years and think it's just got so engrained in my head that I need to be running distance from a toilet or the worst can happen. It means I'm missing out on simple things even just like sitting in a park with my partner and our dog.

Hey Smithst470,

I'm not sure I can say I've experienced IBD induced anxiety BUT I do know a thing or two about dealing with anxiety in general. It's completely understandable, that you experience this heightened fear, when it comes to your colitis. It can be a very unpredictable disease. I remember when my symptoms were particularly bad, I would avoid eating in public; in case I suddenly needed to run to the toilet. Another reason I avoided eating in public, was due to the churning and rumbling sounds my stomach would make. These would happen after every meal (and believe me..the sounds were very loud) and I just didn't want to feel that kind of embarrassment around other people. As for the anxiety, I would suggest meditation (I know it sounds like mumbo jumbo) but if you get into the routine/habit of practicing stillness, you may find it to be very helpful for your symptom. There are various apps, youtube videos etc. that you can try, if you wish. If that doesn't do the trick, perhaps you could look into talking therapies (counselling, CBT etc.), many people find them to be beneficial in the management of their anxiety. I hope you find something that works for you!

All the best,
