Stool test calprotectin

Just had my stool calprotectin results back and they were in the 700 region. Iv got to see a specialist next week. I'm freaking out. Dr said he thinks I may have had gastroenteritis. I was passing mucus and having a bad stomach. I'm so scared it's ibd or cancer. I'm not passing blood and I haven't got diarrhea. I'm a real stress head and have terrible anxiety. I also before this problem had a really spicy meal which had me up all night. I could feel the burning in my stomach. I dont know if my reading is high. The doc didn't seem too concerned

There are several intestinal diseases and drugs (eg, NSAIDs such as ibuprofen or aspirin, and PPI's (proton pump inhibitors) like omeprazole and lansoprazole used for reflux) that are associated with low-grade intestinal inflammation and can give average calprotectin levels between 50 and 300 μg/mg. Infections causing inflammation can result in higher results as calprotectin is released into faeces when neutrophils gather at sites of any gastro-intestinal tract inflammation

Values of 50-150 μg/mg are regularly seen in IBS, and this is why a result between these values often leads to a diagnosis of IBS.

Over 150 is when IBD is considered a possibility and further tests are carried out along with a repeat fcal test

A result of 250μg/mg usually calls for urgent scope and gastro referral. Although guidelines do vary slightly between NHS trusts

Some hot spices can irritate the bowel lining, so it may be something your just sensitive to.

Try not to stress, hard I know, but the chemicals and hormones released by the body during stress can also upset your stomach

Keep me updated x

Thanks for the reply. Gosh 700 sounds really high then. Could it be stress and ibs maybe? Or even the spicy food? I'm no expert but I'd of thought if I had ibd or cancer I'd be more unwell if you get my drift. I dont pass blood and haven't really had diarrhea for the last week or so. I think I had a stomach bug before Christmas so maybe I'm still recovering from that

Although (as Mark, the beast on The Chase, would say) you're in the fun zone, there have been reports of up to 3000 on this site for their Calprotectin tests. I would say that every thing leading up to the test (stress, curry, ill health) would certainly not have reduced your levels, and, anyway, they are so much more advanced now than they ever were with treatments for IBD, there is no reason why you shouldn't lead a near normal life if that is your diagnosis. Please keep us informed and come back if you have any more questions. Good luck.

I can understand your stress. But one thing I've learned in the past month or so is... Stress won't really get you anywhere but rather only make things worst.. Our body goes into defensive mode when we get stressed. The human body is composed of trillions of living cells... So when these cells detect stress, they go into a defensive mode that doesn't help!!

Manage stress and let the doctors do their work.

Hi there

Just got diagnosed with IBD Ulcerative Colitis so I'm still kinda new to this, but from my own tests as others have said above 250 is suspicous to gastro diseases. My calprotectin was 800-850 so don't worry that much.

If you haven't been passing blood and have no diarrhea then I wouldn't be too concerned especially if your doctor says not to be worried aswell. Because from experience I can tell you if there's something to be worried about the doctors will point it out. My doctor told me from the start that this is going to most likely be IBD from my symptoms. My symptoms were severe diarrhea, constant passing of mucus along with a lot of blood with severe fatigue ( no anemia )

So I would say don't stress about it and wait for further tests, the main test that can rule out what the problem is, is a colonoscopy.

As a person who has had IBS for about 8 years before my IBD suddenly appeared I would get severe diarrhea, mucus and abdominal pain every time I got really stressed or had spicy food.

So yea just relax a bit, talk to your doctor and the tests will rule out what the problem is.

I hope it's just temporary and minor issue due to the spicy food.

Best of luck!

What is the pain like with ibd? I get a pressure sensation in my rectum like I always need to have a poop. But I have had this on and off for ten years. And it always happens when I'm stressed. I think it's called Levator ani or chronic proctalgia. I just have a slightly achy back and a few tiny twinges. And I have no bad stomach at night. I sleep soundly. I hear ibd keeps you up at night.
