Prednisolone

Hi guys,I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease a couple of weeks ago and I’ve been put on prednisolone. I’ve been on 40mg for two weeks and have only just started tapering off so on 35mg at the moment. I’m finding that I’m still having bad stomach cramps every now and again and some Diarrhea too, I’m a bit concerned as everyone I’ve spoken to says steroids are amazing and work pretty much instantly making you feel better. I’m waiting for my consultant to call me about my blood results as I’m also being put on Azathioprine but he’s been on annual leave now for 2 weeks and off for another week and have been told I will have to wait until he’s back to discuss (I haven’t been given an ibd nurse yet) so do you think they aren’t working or I need to also be on Azathioprine to feel the benefits?! Sorry I’m so new to this so feel a bit lost!

Pred is only good if your absorbing it. I couldn't take it but azathioprine and mercaptopurine really helped me in early days. Only prob is that these can take up to 12 weeks to get to a therapeutic level

When I first had prednisolone it was in liquid form and given as an enema, as all the damage was in the last section of large bowel, later on when taken orally, did take a little longer to work. I have found Azathioprine does take much longer to start working.

Thank you! I guess I just need to wait until I start taking Azathioprine then!x

Are you finding any improvement in symptoms such as, bleeding before, now none?

From my experience a return of symptoms can be significant as the dose of preds drops to around 15mg.
