Just switched on the news to see that a bomb has gone off among spectators at the Boston Marathon. Are we now classified as "soft targets"?

I guess we always ask what is gained by these activities, but one minute happiness, next devastation. Life is so fickle.

It's unbelievable. So many people there to have fun and to support others, and this happens.

I've just sat watching the news in tears - can't believe it.

I was planning on taking my kids to watch the London Marathon this weekend as I'm sure lots of families did in Boston. Such a horrible thing to happen. My thoughts are with them all.

Horrid :-( just such a horrid thing to happen

I did my run today...and when I got home, I turned on the news and was SHOCKED at hearing about the explosions during the Boston Marathon! I just cannot believe this...and can only keep all the victims in my thoughts and prayers.

What drives people to do this kind of thing ..

My heart goes out to the injured and relatives of the dead.

Why the marathon? What harm have those dedicated runners and their supporters done? Just an easy target. :-(

Been sitting listening to the unfolding news for the past hour and I'm in tears. I've just heard one report of injuries involving amputations, including news of a young person who has had an amputation of both legs. Tomorrow morning I'll be running and thinking about all those who can't.

I've got the BBC News channel on, just watching in disbelief. It has brought tears to my eyes. Thoughts with the victims and families. What a sad day. Someone's got it in for Boston by the sound of it. I'm just hearing that there are unconfirmed reports that more than two people have died.

This is just so shocking and so cruel. It's particularly awful that some of those injured have had to had amputations. and those killed or injured were just probably having a family day out on a public holiday, doing something that they loved and had trained for. The little boy that died was watching for his father to cross the finishing line. I wasn't planning a run today, but I will be out running this morning in support of the victims and all of us who are runners.

I've just woken up to it too. Marathons are such happy occasions, this is so shocking. Ordinary people caught up in the violence.

This is so shocking and sad for all those caught up in mindless violence. Thinking of and praying for those devasted families today. <3 <3

Caught it late last night but have only just had time to really read up about it and see the video.

It is beyond comprehension.

Senseless. mindless destruction of innocent people enjoying life to the full one minute and faced with this evil the next. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.

Unbelievably sad.

Why do people do such terrible things to innocents. What is the possible motivation for such a terrible thing.

My brother inlaw was running in the Boston marathon and his wife was watching so you can imagine the anxiety when we heard what was happening. We were relieved by about 10.45 our time when an email came through to say they were fine and had got back to the hotel. They thought at first the explosions were part of the celebrations that were going on but soon realised the horror of what was unfolding.

This was an evil and cowardly attack on innocent people x
