New shoes (although the pickings were slim in my small town) and a thorough stretching before and after. (found some great yoga for runners on youtube) and finished the run.
Also had a foot/shin massage yesterday, because of the shin splints.
If I am running at home alone on the treadmill, how can I know if my technique is ok/safe?
I looked at the pose technique, but no idea how to apply it.

I'm not sure how you know if your technique is okay. I suppose I'm guided by Laura who pops up now and again to give words of advice re posture and gait. If something felt painful I'd stop and seek advice from a physio or gym instructor. It might be worth doing a few runs in a gym then you could ask for help. Best wishes.
