When will the scales move? Week 5 run 2 done but still they won't budge - there's plenty to shift but the pounds/bmi/fat%/water% just stick!

You're not burning enough calories with your running yet to see any significant weight loss but I'll bet that you've lost an inch or 2 round the bum, tum and thighs ;)

Be patient - it will happen

Be patient. I noticed that I firmed up without losing weight at all during c25k and then post graduation the weight is steadily coming off with the longer runs. That said I weigh more than I did 10 years ago but hubby reckons I have the best bodyshape ever (and he has known me 22 years!) and I have noticed that everything just feels firmer and smoother. I am sure feeling fitter has also changed my posture.

I have noticed a posture change with me too, when walking or just sitting at my desk. It has really helped with neck and shoulder aches.

Hi Jan, I had this exact same frustration and blogged about my lack of weight loss at the end of week 6 as I had lost 1lb since starting C25K. Not losing weight at this point is very common as your body is still adjusting to the new exercise programme. There is a really great blog started by Alaiyo, about this adjustment period and how if you persevere you will eventually see results: couchto5k.healthunlocked.co...

I can also talk of my personal journey which mirrors what Alaiyo said would happen. I am now in week 13, 14? Who knows? Anyway, I graduated on Oct 12th and I can now report 10 lbs weight loss. You may be interested in my waffle about this in my blog: couchto5k.healthunlocked.co...

In the meantime, turn your attention away from the scales and look for other indicators of becoming more toned. Do your clothes feel looser, trousers sitting lower? Often people take mesaurements at the start of the programme as you can monitor progress in that way.

Don't be despondent though, the weight loss will come with time! :)

Hi rollercoaster

I was interested to read this post as since I started running my weight has either stayed the same or I have gained or lost.

I have attend weightwatchers since april and have lost just over two stone and am getting frustrated. Some people say I could be building muscle but i dont think I do enough to do that - I swim, do zumba, group cycling and c25k a week.

I wish I could, as you say ignore the scales, but as I go to ww it is impossible. I have never measured myself so maybe I should measure myself particulary as I managed to fit into a pair of women's running tights from karrimor which were xxl but did not look that big and didnt split when I bent over!

Great question. Same here. W5/R1, nothing yet.

Thank you for the links Rollertoaster.

We just have to be patient and keep at it I guess.

Funnily enough I was about to post a similar question.

I wouldn't say I am dieting, but I am trying to be more sensible about what I eat and in the first 4 - 5 weeks I lost about 9lbs but since then the needle on the scale has been completely stuck - I have even tried other scales in the hope that mine weren't working but sadly they just said the same.

I have recently completed my graduation run and am hoping that now that I am regularly running for at least 30 minutes x 3 times a week it will start to change.

I do know that my body is changing though, a number of colleagues have commented on how much weight I look as if I have lost and every so often when I catch sight of my profile I think 'wow - that looks so different'.

I'm trying to not get hung up on the weight side of things and I have just read Alaiyo's blog so that is encouraging too.

I guess all I can do is keep plugging away :o)

Search Pubmed for articles about exercise and weight loss it is illuminating. Calorie intake has a much greater impact on weight loss than exercise, and researchers are beginning to consider that the way that the body loses weight is also much more complex than a straight forward kcal deficit each day.

Another thing to consider that as runners with extra body fat we don't need to load our bodies with energy snacks in order to be able to fuel a run. I think that we have taken too much received wisdom about exercise nutrition which is intended for elite athletes who don't have body fat.

Have faith from what other have said about their weight loss coming later, and hold onto the knowledge that your body is in better cardio-vascular shape than when you started.

Thanks everyone it's nice to know we're all in the same boat! I know what you mean about body shape etc - I think my double chin is a little less wobbly now than 5 weeks ago. The best thing about this plan is the motivation to keep going with the running and let the weight loss take care of itself (hopefully)

Hi, I'm about week 15 now and I've lost a grand total of 5lbs. However as others have said, I look slimmer. People keep saying wow you've lost weight and can't believe it when I say I've only lost 5lbs. I didn't take measuremens at the start and so wish I had. I'm hoping that anytime now the weight may start coming off.... :-/

I am now on Week9 - In the early weeks I noticed "movement"!!!

Legs firmed up etc but no real weight loss - my missus has commented that I look slimmer though!

In Week8 though 2 couple of Kgs just went though!!

Due to injury, I have had to take a week out without running - but the weight has stayed off - a good sign I hope

I didn't find the weight loss dramatic through the programme either but I did find the centimeters come off. Its not too late to measure your waist, hips, bust, neck, thigh.... anything really and then keep a check. I've lost 8-9 centimeters off my waist and 4-5 off my bust and hips. I've found the shape change really encouraging even if I haven't lost all the weight I wanted. I'm counting on running 3 times a week now to reach my goal.
