Do you need to leave a day inbetween?
Leave a day in between. That's part of the programme. You may not be running but that is when your body is busy doing the work which will enable you to progress, and without injury.
Yep, don't be tempted to skip the rest days. They are an important part of the plan.
Hi
Tuesday and friday are my definitive rest days where I do no exercise at all. Saturday i swm and run, sunday i do a group cycling class, monday i run, wednesday I run and thursday i do zumba.
Hi gew03 I was walking in between my run days and my body was aching especially my hips, shins and ankles so decided to totally rest and do nothing and this has worked the best for me as my body needed to rest and recover and I dont get bored either, I look forward to my run days. Hope this helps you.
Thanks peops!! I will take your advice on board
Related to this, if you have another once-a-week physical commitment you'll find the best way to fit running around that. For example, I ski on a Wednesday afternoon, so I'm going to run Monday, Thursday, and Saturday, with Saturday being run 1. This means the run should be at its easiest by the Thursday one.
I ignored rest days and went for 2 days and ended up injuring my ankle. That was last weekend and I haven't been able to run at all since. It's still sore and I'm trying to be sensible but am feeling very frustrated! Take heed - there is a reason for rest day!
Also don't worry about taking extra rest days. I'd prefer to run on consecutive days as it would fit in with my shift patterns better, however I decided to have extra rest days instead. I'd say it's better to do the programme slowly and complete it injury free, than rush it.
Also hope you recover soon vikicats x
Yes, most advice is to only run every other day/3 times a week but definitely one rest day in between running for us newbies, so that there is time to repair the tiny muscle tears that high impact exercise causes.
If you have time and the inclination, many recommend doing other lower impact exercise and it will help your overall fitness and help improve your running! Things like walking, swimming, cycling, weights all help.
Lots of more experienced runners run most days, alternating an easy run with a more challenging run but most experts say have at least one complete rest day a week.
I am currently reading a book on how to run faster (being a tortoise myself!) in which the author suggests running twice a day (shorter distances) but can't ever imagine being able to fit that in!
Ok I will take advice on board, I ran wk5 run 2 today and def do not want an injury! Feel fit soon vickicats
