Wk5 Run3: Hi there, I'm new to the forum... - Couch to 5K
Wk5 Run3
Hi Lannya,
I'm an old fat bloke who started the course with half a hope he could learn to run. Before W5R3 I'd failed once in week 4 and had to repeat a run so when the 20 minute run came around I wondered whether I was in fact kidding myself and I shouldn't really be doing this programme.
I've since discovered that this run is really a test of perseverance and mental attitude. You're ready to do it, I promise you, just believe that you can and it will happen.
I spent a very restless night before the run because, like you, I didn't want to fail. You've bothered to ask the question because you want to succeed. I'd like to bet that you will.
Good luck.
I agree with Chewy I think you'll do it! You are physically ready, Laura has made sure of that, now it is all about the mental side, believing in yourself. You will surprise yourself I'm sure at what you are capable of. Go for it! Let us know how it goes!
I joined this forum last month to ask pretty much the same question. Take comfort in knowing that nearly all of us have that moment of trepidation before Week 5 Run 3. This is natural -- it's the biggest step up in the programme.
Believe in yourself and believe in the plan, and you will do it. I was doubtful even as I started the run... but it goes more quickly thank you realise. Apparently, more people have trouble with Week 6 Run 1 than Week 5 Run 3. Maybe because they are so pumped up from having run 20 minutes that they go too fast? Not sure. (I didn't have this problem with Week 6 because other folks warned me about it, so I slowed down -- hint, hint)
I've completed W5 R3 this morning! Admittedly it was my second attempt (but that's partly down to the tech issue of not being able to get w6 on my phone at the moment...) I'd been terrified of running for 3 minutes, then of 5 minutes, so 20 mins was a but daunting. But I figured that the programme had worked so far, I'd not been pushed beyond what I was capable of, so I'd just have to trust it.
What worked for me today was running a mainly uphill route for the first half, so that the second half was easier. I managed to time it so that I was on the easy downhill for the last few minutes which left me feeling as though I could probably have managed another minute or two!
Give it your best shot, and remember, if you can't quite manage it and have to repeat the week, that's not failure - it's just giving your body a chance to try again. Have fun!
Yep, can only echo what the others have said. Just pace yourself and you will be fine - the sense of achievement you get afterwards is such a boost. I am on week 6 at the moment and have actually found this week much more difficult and almost had my first fail at W6R2.
Hi Lannya please dont worry....I was very apprehensive (I completed my W5R3 last friday) and I could not stop thinking about it the night before...but I did manage it.....I had to keep telling myself that it was all about pace and not to go too fast so I didnt get burnt out...so please just try and relax and think you can do this as Laura says we have trained for this. Good luck with your run and please let us know how you go....remember just PACE yourself, you can do this !! xx
Did it this morning, first 3 mins worst as kept thinking I've got another x no of this long to do again. Turned music volume up and didn't think about time after that.
Just do it! Get it out your system....
Thankyou so much to everyone who has taken the time and responded. I feel much better hearing from all of you and feel positive. I'm due to complete the run tuesday, so will update you all. Kind of exited now thanks everyone xx
I DID IT Super excited. Thankyou all for giving me the nerve and encouragement I needed, can't believe it. Was hard but manageable. It really does work. Kept telling myself I trained for it, one foot after the other and the time flew by. What a feeling. I did a glory dance on the ring road at 4pm! Must have looked like a total nutter, but don't care. Thankyou again xx
