Not so much a question, as wanting to know what behaviours / idiosyncracies people have adopted since starting this running malarky!
My ones are:
- You are able to put a full load of sports gear in the washing machine (which is all either black or fluorescent!).
- You now browse running magazines in the local newsagents rather than the trashy "celeb" mags.
- When watching the local weather, you automatically start planning when is the best time/day to do your run.
- You spend your days thinking of what new running gear you need next, e.g, head torch, waist pouch, hat, gloves.
- You check your bank statement and payments to "sportsdirect" outnumber payments to "sainsburys"
- The minute you hear someone mentioning they want to exercise more, or "can't run" you jump in with, "have you heard of couch to 5k?" and proceed to bombard them with information, enthusiasm and the website address.
I'd love to hear other people's so please post below!
All of the above (except the sportsdirect bit as I try and spread my spending round, including my amazing local running shop as they are so helpful and knowledgeable).
PLUS
everyitme I hear a song I start "air" running to it to see how suitable it might be to download and put on ipod for future runs.
Oh my these are so true. I'm very proud to say that a number of my friends on facebook have taken up running on the back of my endless updates about my C25K journey which is great.
I get very moody when I can't run which I never expected and I'm also waaaay more competitive than I ever realised!!
I know I have caught the bug coz I would rather not have a glass of wine on a Friday so can do better at my run on Saturday morning. Also now want to lose the rest of weight I need to not just to get to right weight but coz it will help me run faster!
Sorry, but I've just realised I can't be a proper runner after all (sob). The glass of wine on Friday (well, actually it's a G&T, it's wine the other nights) is sacrosanct. Still, I seem to be doing OK! Hope Laura doesn't disown me!
when it doenst bother you that it is raining outside, you havent got any makeup on, your hair is pulled back & you are wearing a baseball cap & bumbag.
I knew I'd caught the bug when I broke my wrist and my first question at ER was "Is it OK if I run with my arm in plaster?" and bursting into tears when I was sharply told "NO!"
...when you wake up in the night and lie worrying that you won't get back off to sleep and won't feel rested enough to go for your planned run the next day...
... when you start planning your other activities round your runs and not the other way around...
...when you walk down your street wearing a bright orange top, green and white and mud trainers, an over-your-head set of headphones (because they stay on best) stuffing your key into your bra and muttering 1-2-3-4 as you go (that Speed podcast has a LOT to answer for...) - and your neighbours are so used to it they don't even give you a second glance...
I woke up at 6am today (Saturday!) to go for a run. But it's a rest day, so thought I'd turn over and go back to sleep. But no....spent a good while wondering whether I should get up and run anyway.
I often want to run twice at the weekend but so far have resisted. Be good to know what it feels like if you give in to temptation. i ran on friday and will go out tomorrow as i find it really hard during the working week.
No I didn't go out in the end, though running on consecutive days would suit my lifestyle much more. I think once I've graduated and but up more stamina I'll go out on consecutive days, purely so I definitely manage to get out 3 times a week, as at the moment that doesn't always happen.
Re-running routes in my imagination to help me get off to sleep and having "fantasy runs" when day dreaming.
Dreaming of running really fast (my husband says I look like the cat chasing mice when asleep.)
Not feeling guilty at eating that mars bar/cake, knowing the exact calorie output of my run that evening!
Having a special running gear part of my wardrobe/sock drawer.
Starting work early so I can leave early to get back for run because weather will be really bad later on and then can sort out kids quickly and get out there, phew.!!
- Your most expensive pair of shoes (by far) are your running shoes
- Your most expensive bras are your sports bras
- You look at other runners when your not running. and analyse their gait, stance, speeds, poise. You also know what a "great" runner looks like, and hope you look like that when you run.
- You plan your other activities (especially those with involve exercise) around your runs
Ha ha, had been wearing sports bras for years as they are so comfy (when you are as podgy as I was!), But definitely all the others, I find myself today even thinking I might have to GIVE UP my recently started horse riding lessons cos my teacher has changed her day off and the after effects of a Friday eve lesson (walking like John Wayne!) have prevented me running since THURS!
Great question Newbie! Many others have covered my points but just to add, that this morning I went for an impromptu run when I woke up and realised the local half marathon was on. I switched on the radio to listen to the coverage of it (even as recently as the Olympics, I found marathons terribly boring and would always switch over if they were on TV) and was so jealous I just HAD to go out for a run!
Totally YES to everything everyone's said... My main addiction sign tho' is grumbling at Laura when she says it's the end and I feel left hanging saying "is that all"?? Only just finished W5R2 tho' so I guess I better update this once I've done R3 :-)!!! Great question Newbie
1- I live and work in separate places, and shocked myself at buying running gear for both, so i don't have to ever forget it...
2 - deliberately running through puddles, cos we can.
3 - hearing child's piano practise and wondering if you can put a beat to that (note to self... don't enter Mercury music prize) . "Air running" is a wonderful phrase... spot on.
3 - finding this board...unable to leave it alone
4 - just suggested it to stressed colleague (earning stripes as Ct5K bore)
5- wearing two bras... and not thinking it odd
6 - excited, scared, proud, anxious, chuffed, doubtful, and surprised all at once.
Huh? I've never heard of that before. One, properly fitted, top-notch sports bra (the highest support grade of Shock Absorber brand, in my case) keeps everything under control.
> 6 - excited, scared, proud, anxious, chuffed, doubtful, and surprised all at once.
This one reminded me of another - feeling hot and cold at the same time.
- You try to work out if you can squeeze a run in between work and an evening social engagement...then being late for said social engagement.
- You are far too stubborn to slow down / walk when you see another runner coming your way.
Rearranging bedroom, so have one drawer solely for running gear - yes (can find everything I need quickly now)
Planning next few runs days ahead - yes - after checking weather, other commitments etc
Spending more time on here than Facebook - yes
Talking running when ever the chance takes - yes
In addition, sending family Christmas pressie ideas, all based around running
And even thinking if family would think I had gone completely mad if I went running on Christmas Day?????
Visited doctor this morning and made sure that running was still ok to do! and they said yes, but to take it steady... (next run wk9 r1 - I can do that steadily!!)
When you take your trainers that are soaking wet and muddy from your previous evenings run into work, wrap them in newspaper and leave them on a radiator to dry off so they're ready for your run the next day!
