Disappointing run....

I struggled with my run again this morning. It wasn't a disaster, I did a 2min38 second walk to warm up, then ran for 30 minutes and the last seven-ish minutes were a mixture of walking and running. There was a flat section where I tried to concentrate on lengthening my stride a bit but my legs felt tired most of the time and I couldn't quite get my breathing right.

I just felt a bit,, well, flat about it - I had such a lovely time with my long run on Monday. I wonder if I needed an extra days rest after that, I also think it might be related to the "ladies' issues" that were discussed at length recently - that tends to wear me out. We're going away tomorrow morning and coming back Monday so I'm thinking of leaving my running shoes at home and having a full three days break from exercising and taking some iron tablets and B vitamins etc. Hopefully, I'll come back feeling refreshed .

I think perhaps I should have a bit of a plan rather than always seeing how far I can go (which hasn't worked this week!). I've been reading various other blogs here to get some ideas and I've downloaded a plan for increasing your speed over a 5k distance so I'll put something together based on those. I thought I'd aim for a comfortable 30min 5k, before trying to build up distance, although I'll probably treat myself to the longer fun run from time to time.

Hi.

I've had a bad week too due to hormones :( Ran on Weds and should have done 28 mins (week 8) but had to give up at 25 mins having pushed through about 3 'barriers' along the way! Well.....I was purple and sweaty and extremely out of breath and to be honest I didn't feel well at all. Was due to run again today but still feeling awful (hormones still) so decided it's better to try tomorrow but I'm dreading it!

I know I should expect good runs and bad runs but I'm so scared that I'll be put off running all together if I suffer again tomorrow but I'm reluctant to leave it more than 3 days.....

I had a three day rest before my lovely run on Monday, when I stayed out for 1hour20mins - you might find it does you good. If you feel bad tomorrow, perhaps have a nice walk instead then run on Sunday instead, you might have more bounce by then :-)

Up until now I have resisted walking as I think that once I let myself give in I will do it all the time - I think I'm just stubborn LOL

I'm going to head out first thing in the morning before I can talk myself out of it.

Looking back at your post I didn't realise you had done such a massive run on Monday - in my (non-expert) opinion you maybe needed more rest after that. If I was you I would just enjoy your weekend and pick up where you left off next week :)

I didn't run all of it - I did the first 5km at a run then the rest was a mixture of running, walking, skipping etc, mostly uphill. Over 6 miles in all but it felt great at the time ! Worth paying the price for now, if I'm honest :-)

You're right: it wasn't a disaster, you are just not surprisingly tired. I would definitely have a weekend off!

Now ....what about that plan.....?!

I'll be walking a lot, looking at classic motorcycles in Northwich, hopefully in the sunshine :-)

As Teresa says it was a disaster but maybe a reminder that we should listen to our bodies more and if we are tired perhaps an extra day rest is a good idea!!

I too am hoping for sunshine tomorrow, well dry weather any way! Have a good weekend and enjoy the break from running

The hangover from a long session can go on a surprisingly long tine I have found. Much longer than you might think. I should just have a nice weekend.

Don't give up on the "how far can I run" sessions - how else will you know ;-)

Just no need to every time.

I was thinking perhaps a once a week "how far can I run", plus an intervals run and a more gentle 30 mins. Now, today I feel as if I could make a decent effort but I'm not allowed to - supposed to be packing ;-)

Sfb congrats on a truly amazing huge run... I bet it was lovely... Especially the high afterwards! Be kind to your body and give it a little extra rest... We all need it sometimes.

What sort of bikes are you into? I ride, though not often enough, a Kawasaki er6n. You like the classics?

We all have off runs from time to time, often not very prepared for them. I was a bit disappointed last night with my run. I'm trying to break the 7k/42min barrier but just couldn't get my breath after the first 5k and ended up 43.5 min... Not too bad I suppose. I could think of heaps of reasons why... Little sleep, stress at work etc but I came to the conclusion that they are all excuses and I let that little devil on my shoulder have his way... Will try again this week...

Enjoy your break. It will be good for you to have some down time too...

I've got a few bikes but, like you, don't get to ride them often enough. The most modern is my Yamaha SRX400 - haven't got used to it yet and brakes that actually work scare me ! I've also got a TriBSA (Triumph engine in a BSA chassis) and all sorts of other stuff.

But back on topic, I can tell I need the break - my hips are sore just walking around (although we have done quite a bit of walking) so hope to get back on track next week :-)

Great bikes... Good idea to rest up. Maybe treat yourself to some pampering? A good massage does wonders for me when I am sore.
