Have finished the C25k program but am hesitant to join an organised run ,such as the park run series parkrun.org.uk/, because of my slow time. I reckon I would be coming in right at the back. Anyone any experience of this?
Park runs etc: Have finished the C25k program... - Couch to 5K
Park runs etc
Have you looked at the results page for the last few runs of the parkrun you'd like to join?
I checked mine out and have seen that the runs recorded can be up to 45minutes, also remember that a lot of people will join these and just walk and not have anything recorded at all.
What have you got to loose? Nothing.
You have so much to gain, the social side of things to name one, fitness, goals, time chasing (if that's your thing)
For me, if you join I'd be looking to you for inspiration.
Go for it.
I'm going to do my local parkrun when I get to running for 5K which should hopefully be in around 3 weeks or so, I've had a look at their results and the slowest was 45 mins also so I'm hoping that I won't come last! I'm really looking forward to it!
I'm going to do one (prob beginning of May) but although know I can do the distance and on checking the time wouldn't quite be last (near though) I feel so unconfident about rocking up on my own....RIDICULOUS I know (you wouldn't believe how confident I can be at work about walking into new situations but this scares me!). Maybe we should all agree on a date and go to our local runs...knowing I have to report back may just make me do it lol
What a great idea!!!
Shall we do it? Let's set a date!!!! 3 weeks is 5 May or we could do 12 May....ready to commit???? If you and I are...I'll post a blog asking others if they want to do it
REALLY excellent idea!! The only thing that's been stopping me is knowing that I could do it any week I wanted! Sadly I can't do either of the dates you suggest, but do do do do go for it!!
Yes definitely but I can't make either of those dates either how about 26 May?? Ooh exciting!
I can do the 26th! Put it on your calendar Minuette. I'll post something later on the Blog page to see if we can drum up others.
I can't believe it: this has made me register on the parkrun website!! A big thank you once again for spurring us all on
My nearest one is a long way, but I think that I still need to do it in order to gain my confidence to run with others. I can't do May 26th because I am teaching at the music centre then, but I can do June 2nd because it's at the start of half term.
TJ - I can't do 26th May either (or rather, think I shouldn't as it's the day before my 10k) but can do 2nd June like you. Shall we set that as plan B for anyone else who wants to join the challenge? NB I am slightly bothered after looking at my local parkrun results and nobody came in above 36 mins - eek! But maybe by then I'll be a bit quicker......
I know exactly what you mean, I wanted to do a parkrun but was worried about finishing really far behind everybody else!
My local parkrun did a beginners event at the end of March and had experienced runners pacing right upto 50 mins to support the new runners. I went to that and did it in 37 mins (it is a very hilly course!)
Everybody was really supportive and they often have back runners so you wouldn't be last!
I would recommend going for it, I was lucky that they did one for beginners but I wish i'd gone earlier now. It was a confidence thing rather than ability
I was persuaded to do a parkrun in Cardiff, just a few weeks after graduating . I was running 5k but quite slowly (being short fat and oldish!) taking about 44 mins on average.
I was really nervous but people were very friendly.
I told myself I would be last but it didnt matter. I ended up doing it in 34 mins 24 seconds (last but two that day!) so I really pleasantly surprised myself and will do it again once I get the chance.
gosh that was a competitive Parkrun if you were back of the pack with 34 and a half minutes! That's not bad a time at all, well done.
Aw flip, my face is redder than it was when I finished my parkrun that day Greg! The reference to 34 mins was a typo, that will teach me trying to communicate in the dark when it was 3 hrs past my bed time!
I actually did it in 38.24, which was still really amazing for me as it was 6 mins faster than my training runs.
I hope I can improve and do it in 34 mins before too long, will keep you posted!
I haven't done one for ages, I really must.....
Currently at week 5 of C25K and did my first Parkrun last week. Used the Podcast then my own music to set a pace I was comfortable with. Came 259th out of 269 but got a age adjusted score of 51% which I was happy with. Didn't feel anybody was bothered I was almost last and the volunteers were all very nice and encouraging.
I'd go for it but if you are not sure suggest you go along and watch. They are in parks etc where the public are walking anyway.
I too have recently done a park run. It took me 33 mins but it takes a little while to register everyones time once you finish. So although people were finishing later we were still waiting. So it really doesn't make any difference, you won't be holding people up and everyone is very supportive and encouraging.
Thankyou for all your replies they have been very supportive and informative. My modem went down after posting the question so I didnt get to read the answers straight away.
After reading your comments I have contacted parkrun to ask them to post any beginners days on the website. I am waiting their answer. In the meantime I will get down to Pennington Flash and have a practice run around the course.
i have been wondering abuot this dillemma too and my theory is (also will work for my jane tomlinson 10k in august) i am going to construct myslef a "number card" with "back runner " on it, then if i am slow, people will think i am doing out of kindness and support for others!!!and i can come in last with no shame r humilation!!
