If you have never packed your trainers you may have missed out on half the fun of a holiday! For those of you who make sure they are the first item placed in your luggage, please share your holiday run destinations & experiences with us.
My first holiday run after graduation was 5 years ago in Canada 🇨🇦 where I unknowingly crossed paths with a bear. My family took a photo of his bear prints in the snow. Fortunately I was oblivious until after the event. My Son & Hubby were having a cuppa & watching me set off on my run when they spied a bear ambling along from the other direction. Fortunately for me neither of us were aware of each other and he crossed over my path and disappeared up into the mountains minutes before I reached that spot!! The only wild life that I actually saw that morning were a herd of deer grazing under the pine trees where the snow wasn’t too thick. 😊
Well, I've never met a bear on my travel runs Annieapple so you win the internet today 😂
My first holiday run was passing through Berlin. I chose the 'hotel' because it was over the road from the park where the Parkrun was. (I use the inverted commas because it turned out to be very very basic accommodation, small chalets with no sanitation and two sets of bunk beds).
I woke up next morning and put my running gear on, then got a massive attack of imposter syndrome so didn't actually do the Parkrun. Instead I just ran around the park, which was really beautiful, and avoided anyone who looked like they might be Parkrunning. In my defence, I'd only just graduated so running 5k was a big deal for me.
Since then I've run in Poland, Russia, France, Greece and Italy. Temperatures have ranged between +30 and -10C. I think I've enjoyed every single one of them, whether by or on a beach, a towpath beside a canal, going through a snowy forest, crunching through autumn leaves or even skirting past 'Keep out or be shot' signs!
Can't wait to be on my travels again, definitely in the 'first thing I pack is my trainers' camp.
🍏🤩 Your travels sound soo exciting …. all these amazing places! I wonder if you will ever go back and join in a Berlin Park Run now that you know you are definitely not an imposter? 🤣 glad you are still alive ( & not shot) to tell us the tales! Thanks for sharing 🥰
🍏 our weather here is far more conducive to a good run! Was it Sophie Rayworth who ran through London at dawn? You are a runner after my own heart …. NE and Yorkshire 🥰
Haven’t run abroad but always pack my running shoes for holidays nowadays. Collecting Scottish islands - Arran, Islam and Lewis so far. Also Northumberland. There’s something really inspiring and satisfying about running on ‘foreign’ territory
🍏 Oh I love the idea of running on The Islands….. always wanted to do a cruise to the Islands so it would make a fab combination 🤔 Yes I agree with you it’s exciting running somewhere different. I have always maintained that running brings us many gifts 🎁
I always pack my running kit. Flying economy with just hand luggage for short trips can be a challenge, but I just wear my running shoes and pack a pair of sandals 😂I’ve run in several European countries (France, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Poland) Australia, New Zealand and all over England. I especially love running alongside water, whether coast or river. Something very soothing!
🍏 👏 Wow that’s a lot of different places!! Yes that’s a good tip to wear a pair of running shoes instead of packing them! I love your idea of running besides water! Soothing sounds as you say plus the benefit of beautiful photos!
🍏 Wow 🤩 what a spectacular photo… and I love the name too!!! Yes high altitude needs to be factored in. I had the same running in the Rockies in Canada. The upside is running at home afterwards feels like a piece of cake 🤣
🍏 What a beautiful venue for a first away run!! It’s one of the special places in the UK & we love going there. I enjoyed many an early morning run through the Fitz & Hope parks in Keswick. I agree it’s such fun to take those trainers to exciting new places…
Late to the Question... ! No bears for me... Eeeek.... lucky you, that he or she, did not cross each other's path!
I have met badgers , rabbits and foxes here in the UK. and only beautiful birds when out if the UK.
I have, only, run out of the UK in one country... France... and I loved it ... the very first time was a revelation... with early runs, before the heat kicked in... the promise of a long relaxed day to come. New sights, sounds and friends to be made. Absolutely gorgeous!
I was browsing back through my running diary and found this post I out out 8 years ago... I was building up to 10K using a Blue Fin Podcast... which I found good fun! I can remember that day, as if it was yesterday... glorious... apart from the toe!
