Started simple stretching today.

I'm 67, have a bad hip, first stage hypertension, am overweight (though have lost 10kg !) And am as stiff as a board. I had a complete knee replacement 18 months ago.I've started simple stretching today, with a view to continuing daily. This is a prelude to commencing an exercise routine, probably at least a month before I try to do convention fitness.

I exercised heavily from the ages of 25 ISH until my late 50's.

But retirement at 60 (mistakenly) led to a complete vegging out. Subsequently I'm quite shocked how stiff, unfit and weak I am.

This is my own fault and is, to a degree reversible.

My diet is mostly ok and food is not my main problem, I'm not prediabetic and at my last drs appt, my Dr expressed the view it's unlikely I will be diabetic.

Hopefully I can reverse to some degree the stiffness and problems, caused by my sedentary behaviour.

Well done for committing to a new routine! That’s such a positive step to make. Is it your intention to do couch to 5k? That’s our primary aim on this board, but we’ve got one totally focussed on strength and flex which might be suited to where you are now…

Have a browse and see what you think!

healthunlocked.com/strength...

There’s also Active10 which is devoted to walking. You might like to join in there too…

Wishing you lots of luck on your journey towards a healthy lifestyle!

This might sound bizarre and premature but I feel slightly better already. I think it's both psychological, finally making the commitment but also, I know from my past experiences of exercising for so many yrs, that just lossening yourself up, makes walking, getting up and down and going up stairs easier.Luckily, I have two fantastic daughters, who desperately want their old dad back, or something not unlike him and a bit more active than I have been.

I have 7 exercises that I do atm, (daily) that are mostly simple 5-10 reps plus a walk to the dog walking park n back, the idea to extend the length of walk slightly each day.

1 exercise I do, called lying clam shells, is ridiculously difficult on my bad hip, so I know it's doing good ! I can only do the exercise slightly and even then the knocking and creaking noises of my hip is quite shocking lol 😂

you can definitely reverse this. At 60 I was 30kg overweight, could barely walk up three flights of stairs and thought I was going to have a heart attack when I did my first 60 second jog (run would be an exaggeration). Now at nearly 66 I’m 32kg lighter, do yoga and stretches twice a week and run for 40 - 50 mins three times a week.

I can’t do much about the wrinkles but I definitely feel much better for the effort and no longer need a knee replacement so good luck my friend. You can do this
