Week 5 Run 2 πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸ‘β˜€οΈ

Another shorts and t-shirt morning. I don’t think my legs are quite so white! So, 2 x 8 minute runs and halfway through the programme.

I did write another workout for this in my watch, so I had buzzing as well as the coach from the app. I also decided to listen to a podcast. Lately, I’ve been β€˜zoning out’ from the music so thought I’d try something different. I selected one from Amazon Music which talked about Aethelstan, the first King of England. I’m interested in that period of history and it was excellent.

So, everything ready and off I go up the hill for my warm up walk. It was a brisk walk this morning! Time for the first 8 minute run and I set off too fast and force myself to slow down. Easy conversational pace for the rest of the 8 minutes. Listening to the podcast really worked for me this morning. I take the same route as yesterday and it’s very quiet. The route involves a β€˜no through’ road and I happily run on the road! I don’t know why I like doing that so much 😊. 8 minutes done and I slow down to a walk.

This 5 minute recovery walk seems longer than I remember from the first time around! I’m happily listening to my podcast when it’s time to run again. It’s uphill for a stretch (only slightly, but I can feel it in my legs and breathing). I’m not a fan of hills having done most of my running in the Norfolk fens! I slow down to allow for the incline. I turn left down the hill and my breathing recovers. Coach says I can speed up at the end if I want to, although he does also say to slow down if I’m getting tired. I speed up a bit! And the run is over. I’m a little out of breath, but feel it was a good run.

Home for stretches and coffee! β˜•οΈ

Terrific! I was set up to audiobook for Friday, but ended up with music. But actually I'm not enjoying the music as much as I was, and before this all started my walks were with a book or podcast. I do miss that, but am unsure about having Laura in my ear as well as Melvyn Bragg or Lauren Laverne ...

And my shorts are on the way, so the neighbourhood may be exposed to my knees by Thursday!

Yes it’s easier to listen to audiobooks or podcasts once you’ve graduated. Also the Nike Run Club app is excellent, too, for later on. There are talks on there for specific distance runs, or time runs. Very motivating ! Many people on here use them. The app is free.

Good that your shorts are on the way! I remember feeling very self conscious in my lycra shorts and ran at 5:00 am 🀣 but soon got over that and don’t even think about it now apart from the white legs the first few times I wear them in the spring!

Halfway already! And it worked for you despite the hill, listening to audio book or podcast seems like a good idea.

Thanks, Sola. I’m enjoying the structure of the programme, it seems right for me just now! The podcast worked well 😊

I keep thinking I'll try a podcast but using NRC guided runs and don't know if I'd get annoyed when it interrupts πŸ˜‚

Yes, the interruptions are a bit annoying!

Congratulations on the halfway point!

I’m working up to wearing shorts on my runs, I’m very self conscious about my legs πŸ™ˆ but I’ll get over it!

Also, I might try listening to a podcast and see how I get on. That’s a great idea.

Hope you have a great day πŸ™‚

Thanks!

Do it! Wear shorts. Nobody cares at all 😊

I’m 69 and I wear shorts and Lycra without a second thought! I was a bit concerned about the shorts to start with, but soon realised that nothing bad happened 😊. Plus - it’s awful to be too hot!

Ok then! You’ve convinced me! I will wear shorts on my next run πŸ€—πŸ‘ and I’m going to order a pair of Lycra ones too! I love me a bit of stretch πŸ˜‰

My first few runs out were in long track suit bottoms. In summer. I was similarly self conscious. I didn't really want to be seen as a runner.

That passed fairly quickly. I gradually started wearing what was appropriate for the conditions.

This sounds great! I think you like running on that no through road because it's an act of rebellion - you own the road!
