Hi lovely runny friends, I'm still here and I've been quietly trying to get back to running for - well, since the Jurassic age it seems. Anyway I restarted c25k with a friend who was also restarting after a long break. We've taken it easy, trying to use the Japanese slow jogging technique (or as oldfloss might say, harnessing our inner snails) 🐌🐌

I've repeated the odd run but on the whole, taking it slow has been working. I was frankly worried about this run (week 5 run 3) because I've had so many issues with injuries and illnesses. But yesterday we went for it, and IT WAS FINE!!!

We're very proud of ourselves because we are a few years older and more battle scarred than the last time we got this far. Week 6 here we come!

It really does, and I know the problem with it is mainly in my head, but even so, it feels SO GOOD to tick that one off!

I'm starting again myself. A combination of no bathroom for nearly a month, so unable to shower, illness and apathy have meant no running for nearly six months.I'm at the beginning of week two and it seems like a mountain to climb at the moment.

I bet it does seem like a mountain ahead, but remember you’re in a great position in that you know that mountain well because you’ve been up it before. You’ve got skills and experience this time.

It sounds like you’ve had some serious challenges! I can totally understand how going running was impossible with no shower! Just wishing you lots of luck with the programme. I’ve found coming back after a break hard to start with but once you hit your stride, it’s wonderful again and so worth it.

It's so hard to get back when your base fitness level drops isn't it! I actually started with a few weeks on the Active 10 walking app just to get me back in the habit of going out of the door with my trainers on. Then I repeated week one when I finally started. Do whatever you need to keep going.

Thank you. Having a running buddy kept me going really, especially when the weather has been uninspiring. It's too easy to look out and think, "not today". But if you're meeting someone, you don't want to let them down (or look like a complete wuss!)

Well done! As another grumpy (and old girl!) I've also just repeated Week 5 Run 3 having started again after slightly injury, and feeling quite excited by that. Agree with others who say it's a bit of a milestone!

I want to try the Japanese slow running thing properly. I'm 61 and I'm never going to be fast, but I'd like to do longer distances.

I can confirm that it's much gentler on the joints! I forget now and again, but the twinges remind me to keep my feet on the ground.

I know what you mean - it’s taken me ages to get to where I feel almost normal running again. It seems to be 2 steps forward and 3 back lately. Last year I had 2 covids and a nasty 5 week virus in December which has been hell to shake off but this last weekend I suddenly could breathe clearly again and my legs dont seem quite so heavy now.

I’ve also worked my way through C25k again and just starting with B210k now which was a bit of a struggle today ( wk1 day 2 ) but I did it and I’m feeling better for making myself get out there. I was moaning to my daughter about struggling and she said “ mum you were 65 when you started running and you are nearly 70 now!! Of course you aren’t going to find it so easy to bounce back! Don’t be so hard on yourself!!” 😔yes dear …..

Don’t think the weather has helped us all either but I well done you for your 20 mins!! 👏. Last October I was chuffed as I ran a 10k with no walk breaks but haven’t managed it since. I did managed a 10/1 run/ walk 10k last month but it was soooo hard. I don’t seem to be able to run longer than 10 minutes without a walk break now .

Never mind once the spring comes we will all feel much more like it I’m sure 🌼💐🌷

That's what I'm hoping Lou! There have been so many of these mystery "not-covid" viruses around that knock the stuffing out of us in the same way. Think it may be quite a while before I think about 10k again🤔 that's a massive achievement.

Lovely post GOG, it’s good to have you back! I’m not sure I ever got out of the Japanese Slow Running technique despite my best efforts so I’m still the slowest runner in the world - but like you say, we’re all a bit older and still out there doing it! So embrace that inner snail and enjoy, whoop whoop🥳!
