After having made the poor decision last week to map my runs I found out that I wasn't quite the image of lithe runner that I imagined. π In fact I jog at an excruciating slow 10 minutes per km. So, I decided on week 9 run 1 I needed to speed up. I failed to listen to my elders here, who said slow, slow and slower. Off i went trying to run faster and I took a minute off my Km time Still very slow but a whole minute faster. Well... the rest of the day I felt exhausted. I had tired aching legs and even had to put off my run 2 for an extra day. Today off I went with the good words of my elders and I took it slow.. shuffled for half an hour, but did half an hour. The moral of this story, for me ( and we're talking real couch potato 8 weeks ago) is definitely listen to your elders, don't let your ego get in the way. Consolidate, build muscle and finish the programme. I can work on speed later π
Week 9 run 2 done... just!: After having made... - Couch to 5K
Week 9 run 2 done... just!
Hey fr, the snails can always speed up later. Shuffling is good remember the great Mohammed Ali - fly like a butterfly and sting like a bee. That's you.... shuffling is a winning move and only one official run to go. Yes you're one foot on the podium...
Ha, yes froggyrunner...and look at the tags your post threw upπ...
Go you (slow and steady π)x
I decided, on Tuesday, to run a mile faster than I normally would. All that ended up happening was that I went light headed and had to sit down. Speed will come in time - focus on graduating for now and then you have the freedom to play around with your speed! Just don't do it like me!!!!!
There is nothing wrong with trying to get faster.........but you have to do it slowly.
Of course you will feel more tired than when you ran slower.........so does Mo Farah.
Rather than trying to push for a whole run at a faster pace, why not try intervals, or fartlek which is basically intervals that you make up as you go. Each run makes you stronger and so potentially faster. You are doing great.
Yes, but Mo Farah at his slowest is still twenty times faster than me at my fastest I'm getting exhausted watching the distance runners on the athletics at the moment. I reckon Mo's legs probably move faster in his sleep than mine do at full pelt! And, you know what, that's fine - I wouldn't want his training regime!
Though I totally agree with you, I went to IAAF Championships on Monday and have since been following on the TV ... what I'm totally in awe of and find impossible to get my mind round is the stride length of these athletes. They have got to be a zillion times faster than me because their stride rate is higher than mine and that stride length must be 5x mine.
Absolutely. I get shin splints and if I over stride it makes them worse so my stride is very short and my feet raise themselves about half an inch of the ground - what these atheletes do is amazing. I love what Mo said last night - train hard, race easy. Says it all really. I'm not sure he's as naturally gifted as Bolt was at his best but he works to be the best he can be.
