Greatest Hits Radio listeners voted RUNNING up that hill by Kate Bush No. 3 as the song that makes them happy, No. 1 was ELO's Mr Blue Sky, that is another song which is very good to run to.

My favourite running song is ".Keep On Running" by The Spencer Davis Group recorded in 1965.

The lyrics arn't actually about running although it's a great song to run to, words are about a person who is hiding from her true love and 'running' away, everytime I hear it when out a walk I have a short 2 minute run while the song is playing. the lyrics of the first verse are

"Keep on running, keep on hiding, one fine day i'am gonna be the one to make you understand, Oh, yea, I'am gonna be you man"

πŸ€” huh! Interesting! πŸ‘πŸ½

In a good running song I’m looking rather more for a strong beat at a particular rate. I run to the beat so I have playlists for different beats-per-minute ranges, depending on slow or faster running sessions.

I just love running to the beat as it seems to give me a bounce.

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduateβ€’ in reply toCBDB

A lot of dance music have strong beats that helps runners to keep to a steady pace.

Have a look at Willow Withers on Spotify, lots of dance music and some very ambient stuff too, I don't know what beat they are, might be too fast but.

I think I found a playlist of willow’s mellow pieces (see pic). Just the right thing for a slow run!

Share button of a whole playlist is behind the dot dot dots. Looking forward to listening to it whilst running.

In fact, am about to head out now!

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduateβ€’ in reply to59er

Indeed 59er, as the Slade song goes "does your granny always tell you that all the old songs are best", of course there are a lot of talented new song writers now but I wonder if the songs of today will be remembered in 50 years the way that music of the 50's to 80's are remembered now in 2023.

A few years ago in menorca there was a yacht called mr blue sky. Worth millions. I like lots of songs not really any as favourites but on my phone on ringtone I have que sera sera Doris day. Everybody laughs when fone rings. Love that song. Mostly on podcasts now with walking.

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduateβ€’ in reply toDoris8

That is a nice song by ELO, perhaps that yacht called Mr Blue Sky was named after the song by The Electric Light Orchestra.

Love both of those! When people ask me why I run I often echo the sentiment from 'running up that hill'. There must be so many people who would love to be able to run yet can't for one reason or another, having to listen to perfectly able-bodied adults refusing to exercise. I am grateful for every run I go on

My Spotify playlists are full of 60/70’s rock music. You just can’t beat it.

One of my favourite songs of all time…”She Said” by Barclay James Harvest…is 8 minutes long, I found it perfect to keep me going when I started the longer runs on C25k πŸƒπŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸŒπŸŽΆ

Mr Blue Sky is the conclusion of the Concerto for a Rainy Day, side three of the double album Out of the Blue. It has an interesting conception story.

Shostakovich Symphony No. 10 2nd movement would keep anybody running. youtube.com/watch?v=C2T97Gs...

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduateβ€’ in reply toComte

Some classical music is also great for running, Shostakovich is one of Russian's greatest composers, more modern than classical.

Comte profile image
ComteGraduateβ€’ in reply toAlMorr

Shostakovich composed this symphony in 1954. He had terrible difficulties under Stalin, as did other Soviet musicians. In particular he lost his job at the Moscow Conservatoire after his 9th Symphony which Stalin had ordered to celebrate the end of the WWII but as it was sardonically humorous it was not at all what Stalin wanted.

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduateβ€’ in reply toComte

Thanks Comte for that information, I have that symphony on Spotify and will listen to the whole work (not running) this evening.

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduateβ€’ in reply toAlMorr

On Wednesday evening with my headphones on not to desturb my neighbours I listened to the whole of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10, excellent work.

Both great tunes 🎢 I always smile when β€˜I will survive’ by Gloria Gaynor comes up on my playlist πŸ˜‚ especially at the end of a longer run. It always made me smile too when β€˜Back for Good’ by Take That came on right at the end of my C25K playlist just as I got back to the car πŸš™. Perfect timing but quite by chance. I love to run immersed in my favourite tunes. I find it soothes all the senses at once. Don’t like running up hills though. I’ll leave that one to Kate πŸ˜‚

Greatest Hits Radio is my channel of choice. When Simon Mayo left Radio 2 we went with him to GHR. Now the wonderful Ken Bruce is joining the β€˜ Dream Team’ πŸ˜€πŸ˜€

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduateβ€’ in reply toReggiegirl

Simon Mayo was also on Scala Radio when it began a few years ago, however, I don't think that he was a suitable music presenter for a classical music station, he feels more comfortable on the likeing of Radio 2 and Greatest Hits Radio, that was quite a surprise that Ken Bruce is leaving Radio 2 for GHR.

misswobble profile image
misswobbleGraduateβ€’ in reply toAlMorr

I remember when Wogan was discussing the loss of favourite R2 presenters, and that the Beeb’s attitude was, β€œif it ain’t broke, break it!”

Which is where we are today. Is Johnny Walker holding out? πŸ˜€

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduate

Good choice Frizzbomb67, Gloria Gaynor had some fabulous hits in the 70's, including 'I will survive', probably her greatest song, I don't tend to run with music, I never take my Smartphone to parkrun, however, I do a lot of my walking with music accompaning me.

It's a funny thing about 'best running songs' - they're always personal of course and tend to fall into one of two categories - either a favourite or one that exactly matches ones preferred cadence. I have only got two (so far) that match both criteria, since I don't have the skills to process my music through one of those BPM setting programmes. When either tune comes round on rotation it is always a little treat!

AlMorr profile image
AlMorrAmbassadorGraduateβ€’ in reply toPugwash

There are some apps Pugwash that have 'best songs for runners' such as on Spotify, you could always try one of them.
