Back to it after 10 days in a very hot Mallorca. The last run I did was w5r2 so thought it better to repeat before going for the full 20 minutes and did pretty well!
it was 8 degrees this morning and my hands were really feeling it, I’ve got a thin warm jumper which I wore for the whole run today but my hands were *cold*.
I’m wondering what ‘keep warm’ kit people use. I spoke to a friends boyfriend about running over winter and he (having run for 14 years of so) said that he normally had ‘a season off’. Is that what’s recommended generally? Or can you keep going when it’s really cold?
thanks!

In the UK, a temperate climate, people tend to run all year-round. It's just a matter of being sensible and layering up appropriately.
As for other countries, people in colder climates eg Scandinavia, Greenland, north USA, Canada, Russia, etc will continue running in very very cold temperatures ... eg -20C.
I’m in Scotland so the heat in summer is less dramatic…..though we are heading to Australia over Christmas so will need to wrangle the summer there for a few weeks!
I bought a thin pair of lightweight running gloves in Lidl last year and they worked perfectly! I find I need a buff and a beanie when it's really cold but otherwise just several lightweight layers and a thin jacket. The aim is to be a little chilly when starting out so that you're comfortable once warmed up!
As ever, totally agree with your posts!! I’m excited for winter kit shopping! All I need really is a couple of long sleeve tops but who knows what I might end up with!
I'm in the UK too. If I were to take a season off it would be summer! This one in particular has at times been too hot and humid for my liking - I much prefer running when it's cold. I ran my fastest ever 5k in a hailstorm!
The most I've needed to wear clothing wise is a short sleeve shirt and running jacket (which ends up undone and flapping around all over the place by the end of a run!), leggings and gloves. The only bit of me that ever really seems to feel the cold is my fingers, so decent gloves are a must but, otherwise, stick to basic clothing and layering and you should be fine. Don't be put off by the cold!
I once ran happily in a hail storm (a cap is key for me it turns out, I don’t want the rain on my face). As an Australian living in Scotland I was very proud of myself for that one!
Loads of great advice. I’d add, think about being seen on grey, misty days. I’ve got a fluro yellow jacket and a head torch for early morning/evening dark runs.
The thing that I find trickiest is not getting too hot once I’ve started. Layers are great in that respect.
Hi Wwps ! Everyone is very different when it comes to temperature and clothing. I love running in the cold, and will wear a short sleeve t-shirt until I can bear it no more, then I’ll wear a long sleeve fluorescent t-shirt. I don’t do layers as they annoy me once I heat up. Gloves are a must though in the cold, and I tend to wear a peaked cap to keep either the rain off my glasses, or the sun out of my eyes depending. You will find what works for you 😊.
