Problems with my left calf

Hi. I am now running 3 to four times a week, each run between 4 - 5K. All was good until about 4 weeks ago when I pulled my left calf. I have been doing strengthening exercises and stretches regularly and didn't run for nearly 3 weeks to give it a chance to rest and repair. I ran again on Saturday, which went well, then again on Monday, and that's when my calf went again! I'm thinking of buying compression socks/calf sleeves to see if they will help. Does anyone use them, and if they do, do they make any difference?

I know a lifelong runner who suddenly found he had tight calves and the physics could not get to the bottom of it. Eventually he started wearing compression socks and his issue cleared up.

He didn't have a definite injury, only unexplained tension. The compression socks may work, especially if you wear them after your run, as they supposedly aid recovery and blood flow, but they will not repair damaged muscle.

Take care.

Thank you, much appreciated. I think it'll be worth giving them a try.👍

Hi,I have tried successfully with Magnesium and Potassium tablets. You could find them at Holland and Barrett. When I had calf pain, I have alternated days with long runs with days with shorter runs.

Thank you. I currently take Magnesium but can't take potassium. The alternation of runs is a good idea. I think I may alternate with a swim, in the short term.👍

I am surprised that potassium supplements can be purchased over the counter. A high potassium can cause dangerous cardiac arrhythmias and supplements should be given based on blood levels and medical advice. So I can only assume that the levels in the Holland and Barrett products are so negligible they are actually of no use whatsoever. A well balanced diet should provide all that we need.

Thank you. I do eat a well balanced diet, with the exception of a little too much sugar occasionally in the form of puddings!🤣 Just bought compression sleeves and now increasing the regularity of my strengthening exercises, which will hopefully help.
