So this will be my first run in heavy rain! Here in Scotland (Dumfries) the weather is atrocious! The river Nith has burst its banks and lots of shops have had to close because of flooding. I wondered if anyone had any tips on running in the rain?!

Firstly how's your front crawl or breast stroke 🤓, Seriously know your route! Severe weather can alter what is a normally familiar route, bit of tree branch, other debris etc.
There's many discussion about what to wear in wet weather but remember we're waterproof whatever you wear it's generally going to get heavier!

Yeah when I’ve got my waterproof mac on it does make me feel heavier therefore making the run a bit harder but I think I’m up for that today! I think I just need to accept that i am going to get very wet!!
That waterproof Mac...... It's gonna get warm, picture a boil in the bag meal (if I'm not showing my age 👴) though it's always an option to remove it if that happens 👍
Yeah that’s what I thought! I can always take it off if it gets too much but I’m sort of prepared to get totally soaked!
Once you are wet, you can't get any wetter..........why lug a coat around?
Good point! I got soaked but actually loved it and didn’t get cold at all

Try not to run through flooded areas, you won’t know if manhole covers have blown off.I don’t wear waterproofs in the rain, although I have a preference for a certain running top over the others as it doesn’t cling to my chest the same when it’s soaked.
The problem with rain is not that you're going to get wet, but that the wetness can conduct the cold through to your skin. If you're actively running you will be getting warm anyway from the inside.
It's helpful to wear a base layer that will feel still warm when damp, and an outer layer that will act as a windbreak to reduce the windchill. They don't need to be waterproof.
I've been out recently in chilly, moderate rain and not been able to feel it at all, through two layers and running gloves. I was even wearing shorts! (I wouldn't have been if it was much colder.)
In summary (or wintery) the secret is layers.
If you wear glasses like me, wear a peaked hat - a baseball cap or some such! Expect to be heavier when get home too (wet clothes 🤣). Running in the rain is really liberating though, enjoy! ☔️
I actually did enjoy and it was liberating it was like having a shower in nature but clothed obviously! I think what i wore was good as I didn’t feel too weighted down even though I was soaked!

I did! After a shower I feel great I’ve got another run on Sunday and the forecast is predicting heavy rain so I might enjoy another one!

Fab, there are quite a few of us that love running in the rain...it's certainly invigorating, and fun when everyone else is running for cover & you're out there in t-shirt & capri pants just enjoying being alive. Well done on getting out there 😁👍🎉

I’m not far from you and have ceased running for this week. It’s just too easy to slip and come a cropper, my route is through muddy areas. Whatever you do, do not put your trainers in the washing machine. It will wreck it.

Well i take the wimp option at times. Fire up utube on my large flat screen. Select a nice 30min beach run and run on the spot. Park runs and races are available from all over the world. Better than nothing or risking life and limb. 😁

I always wear a running cap to keep the rain off my face.
Also live in Scotland (Fife). From late August onwards to April, rain is the norm. I love it. My favourite weather to run in. Long sleeved top with a short sleeved top over it, and any type of running cap to keep water out my eyes and all is good. After a while you don't really feel the rain😁. It keeps you cool.
Thanks for the advice! I definitely need to get a running cap then as the water was getting into my eyes a lot! I personally loved it so I think I’m going to enjoy the next few months!

Yeah! It was quite a shock when I realised my shoes weren’t waterproof!
Splashing through puddles like a child and noone to tell you off- one of the best things about running that only runners know about!!
