Young at 60 - Week 4 smashed

Just completed week 4 - took up running a few weeks before my 60th - am either mad or insane. Every time I think enough - the taurus bull kicks in and says rubbish, keep going, along with the cheery Sarah urging me on. Am overweight, smoked until I was 57 and love my food - so took up running in the hope I can enjoy tucking in - lol :)

Thank you - fret about every new stage then talk myself into it - its only a few more minutes than last time - I didn't die or anything before - head down and go really really slowly - although not many walkers have passed me yet 😀

Its addictive. We all have our own pace and that's absolutely how it should be. Enjoy every run. I am just putting 1 foot in front of the last and thrilled with every run completed.

It sure is - remember my first run when I was actually concerned my legs would break 🤣 then when they didn't you just punch the air and do the next one

And that’s why we comment on posts, to give the writer a bit of a boost, we started c25k in April 2019 and I gave up smoking january 2020 so do know it’s a great achievement, I put on a stone and sure it would have been more if I didn’t run This forum is so great for help and encouragement

Thank you for taking the time to reply - makes it all worthwhile and almost looking forward to the next run - after my day of rest to recover 😀

Well done I completely understand you I too have started this at 60 and am loving the sense of achievement I get, also running with the lovely Sarah. My only advice is to make sure you do the stretches afterwards. I didn’t at first and had a problem with my heel and had to take a month off. This group is amazing so kind and full of knowledge.

Keep it up you are doing amazing 🤩

thank you, yes i do the stretches and stick to the rest days - dont want any injuries to slow down the progress :)

This is great progress. Have faith in the programme...it really inspires you and guides you to build up your stamina week on week. I too was late straining running, at 66 this was my retirement gift to me. I am now consolidating after graduation and now run 3 times a week. Keep it up. You have this!

👏 fab stuff! I smoked for years and years too. Well done on kicking that. The grit you used to quit smoking you can use to keep running 😀

i cheated a little and took up vaping - but it got me through and one thing i do not feel is breathing probs when running - more the legs which are starting to feel a little stronger :)

Hi supsusie, I´m 67. Stopped smoking 20 years ago*. Took up running, dieting and exercises about 10 years ago, after I put on a "little" weight. I was always into sports, but life somehow changed. As long as you´re otherwise healthy do as much (just as much) as you can! Ignore all nasty comments along the way - they are mostly from those who need it even more dearly than you! There are also lots and lots of online exercises you can watch and do at home! Great to get the heart rate up! All the best! Nike says: Just do it! ;)

*) A recent lung test baffled the doc: 100-140% age-related! He couldn´t believe that I smoked for so long and 40/day. That alone was worth the effort! haha

that is brilliant with the smoking - tried the exercising at home but loving the running more - might combine the two if I manage to graduate :)

I combine the two, ie run, run, exercise, run, run, exercise, run, .... etc. That way I come to a full hour. Then do more - other - exercises at home lying down. Got a balance board for home use as well. Whenever I think of it ... sometimes. Good to do an all round routine. Can´t do without it anymore. Building muscles is the objective, thereby burning more fat during the day. You´ll see! Promise.

Excellent. When we first went into strict lockdown last year I started walking and jogging in the house as we couldn't go out and got so used to it, This year started the Couch to 5 k - still indoors - but now so badly want to do it outside and along a local cycle path but haven't yet plucked up the courage to go out on my own. I'm a fairly fit 71 and now on Day 3 of Week 4. I'm determined to go out on my own on Thursday!! (When it was my 71st birthday my son bought me running trainers, my husband bought me a Fitbit and my daughter bought me a pro hula hoop so I think they all feel Im capable haha)

I'm backing you all the way for Thursday. The FIRST time is always the hardest as our minds (well mine does!) tend to imagine the worst, but once you've done it you will feel such a great sense of achievement that it will inspire you to do it again. I can't say I enjoy running now (completed C25K a couple of months ago) but I do love the feeling of achievement when I finish a run. Good luck

I'm backing you too for Thursday. It is great getting out of the house - don't over-think it. Rain, snow, wind, frost, it's only 30 minutes so you'll be fine - nice warm shower and a fantastic sense of achievement when you get home again. Maybe one of your family could do the brisk walk with you - they sound fab and very supportive. Let us know if you do it - we'll be cheering you all the way!

I hope that the Thursday run went well and that you enjoyed it more with the change of scenery. Sounds to me that you are more than capable :)
