I tackled W4R1 early this morning and found the jump to 5 mins of running quite tough. But despite my thighs burning and my shins really complaining, somehow I managed to get through it. The only way I could do so, was by shouting at myself as I ran (jogged very, very slowly) to 'come on' and 'you can do it' and somehow, I managed it.
For anyone worried about the weeks ahead, as I was, I say this - your body can do it, even if it hurts at the time, but it's your mind and willpower that will get you through the tough times. Have the belief and naturally, once you've done the first run of a week, you know you can do the rest because you've already done it and lived! (Of course, weeks 5 and 6 have 3 different runs but otherwise, each week has 3 of the same runs.)
We can do it! Good luck to everyone doing the C25K programme. I'm off for a peppermint tea now. Pep talk over!

Brilliant!! I know exactly what you mean with shouting/talking to yourself mid-run, I do that myself too!! I used to run my local park run a few years ago and would give myself a fist pump and 'come on' every week when I got to the 4k marker! No idea what the runners behind me thought of it but I guess they got used to me doing it, haha! Unfortunately picked up an injury so stopped running but recently got back into it and and really enjoying it. I'm just behind you, I did run 3 of week 3 yesterday so will be doing week 4 run 1 tomorrow! We can do this!
Thanks for your reply. So glad it's not just me shouting at myself! Good luck with your W4R1 tomorrow. You most definitely can do it! 👍Let me know how it went. 😀
Stretching after every run and doing extra strengthening exercises as linked to in the guide to the plan, really will make things much easier for you in the long term.
Thank you. I always do the stretches after my run which definitely helps the soreness later on. I think I could be doing more strengthening exercises in between run days though. Thanks for the advice. 😀
Good for you! I actually use the original podcasts with Laura who is so nice and motivating that I can't swear at her but do shout at myself, especially in the last minute of the last run when all I want to do is collapse on the road. So glad it isn't just me. So lucky that I live in a rural area 😉
I’m doing it on a treadmill, I didn’t trust myself to not collapse in a heap outside. I’ve just started week 8 and when I’m done, I’m going to start again outside, especially now that I know that I can actually run and not need oxygen 😂
Wow! Week 8. Go you! At this present moment, I can't even begin to think about running even for 10 minutes, let alone 30. No doubt I'll get there though, but it will involve lots of shouting. You'll be great running outside when you decide to. I don't know if I'd have the motivation on a treadmill. I don't have one anyway, so no choice. It has to be the road. I do sometimes see hares and other wildlife so that's a bonus. 😀
It’s taken me a while to get here and it’s my second attempt but I’m actually quite enjoying it now. I had to do several weeks of just trying to run for a few seconds or so because I was so unfit but the first time I actually did the first week, I was on cloud 9 and that feeling never goes away with each run. It’s amazing how good it makes you feel when you complete each one ☺️ you’ll be there before you know it!!
