Broken wrist and running

Hi everyone, not been on here for a while so good to be backšŸ˜€ I graduated in June last year and have been regularly running ever since for fun and fitness. However, I slipped on black ice in mid Feb (not whilst running, thankfully)and smashed my right wrist, both radius and ulna). Been off for 6 weeks and just had the cast removed. I know rehab will take time, , just wondered how soon before I can get my little running shoes out again šŸƒā€ā™€ļø

Sorry about your fall during the winter, once you do resume running, depending on long you are off running, it would be advisable to go back to the earlier weeks of C25K, take all the runs slowly and see how it goes.

Hi, I also took a tumble and fractured my wrist - fell down a pothole whilst running! I found it more comfortable when I started back again to wear a wrist splint as it helped with the discomfort of jarring. My consultant suggested this, she was also a runner. I also found it took me a few weeks to get back to my normal running style, however hard I tried. I think subconsciously I was afraid of falling again. Good luck with your comeback.

Thank you! Nightmare to fall down a pothole! How long was your recovery from fall to normal range of movement? Iā€™m quite nervous, but really want to get out there again. Itā€™s only been a couple of days since the cast was removed and am now fitted with a removable splint. I guess I will have to take it slowly:)

How awful for you. I broke one of the bones in my wrist in October when I was running with my eldest grandson but didnā€™t have a cast out on just a splint and was told I could carry on running so I decided to have a break for about 3 weeks and then did a bit of JogRunSprint to see how it felt at first it was walkjogrun and only very slowly with my splint still on but I managed to keep going slowly. But I would ask your physio as youā€™ve obviously had a bad break in the two main bones. šŸ¤žyouā€™ll get back out there soon just take it slowly when you can and Iā€™m sure youā€™ll soon be running again.

Thank you! All a bit scary right now, but Iā€™ll get therešŸ˜ƒgood advice to ask the physio, seeing him for the first time next weekšŸ˜ƒ

So sorry to hear about your recent injury. I had a bicycle accident a few years ago and had a very similar injury to you which resulted in having surgery on my wrist to insert a plate and pins. As a result of my injury and my wrist being cast incorrectly following the surgery, I developed Complex Regional Pain Syndrome which I still suffer with today. Please make sure you have intense and timely physiotherapy as this will help you gain the strength you need to have full use of your right arm again. I wish you a speedy and full recoveryšŸ¤—

Thanks for the reply, never having broken a bone before, itā€™s tricky knowing whatā€™s normal and whatā€™s not in terms of pain! How awful for you to have experienced a cast being incorrectly set and now having to bear those consequences. I have been recommended a physiotherapist and am starting sessions next week...just so desperate to get back to normal, but itā€™s going to take timešŸ„²

I had never broken a bone either! Unfortunately, as a result of the accident, I had to take early retirement after working for the same company for 38 years. I went back to work six months after the accident, but the chronic pain meant I just couldnā€™t function at the same level. Following months of physio, I was referred to a local pain clinic. Thankfully, this had a positive impact on how I was able to manage the pain and the need for medication. The support you receive within the next few weeks will really help your recovery both physically and mentally. I definitely believe C25K has helped me manage with pain on a daily basis.

Look after yourself and enjoy your C25K journey šŸ˜˜
