Music and running

Can I ask basic, and probably an old person question? How are you all listening to music? I've just finished week 7, so I'm running for longer periods now. Michael Johnson on my app keeps letting me down (freezing, and, even worse, restarting! Probably my rubbish phone), so now I'm running in silence just glancing at my running watch occasionally. Recent 59th birthday present! I end up just counting to 4 over and over again. I think that's in time with my breathing perhaps.

I use Spotify you can use the free version and you can search for music you like and put it on a play list that keeps all your chosen music together 😊

Thankyou. Just installed the App. Turns out I have an account on Spotify! - daughter obviously using it. Just downloading a playlist of Road Trip Songs. I'll see how that goes and set up my own playlist after I've tried it. Need something quite upbeat I think. Thanks for advice.

It's got Bruce Springsteen's Born to Run on the list! That might be pushing it a bit. Certainly not born to run, but giving it a go anyway!

And they have play lists for certain tempos eg 160 paces per minute etc.

Buddy34 profile image

Yes I tried 180bpm for parkrun it's fast

Joster profile image

Faster than me!

Couldn't run like that all the time though.

These tempos paces how and where can I access them?

Joster profile image
JosterGraduate in reply toItzbronte

In spotify, you will find a "Workouts" section, and then go to the Running Playlist section and they have playlists at all different paces. I wanted to attach a screenshot but don't seem to be able to.

Thank you. The thing you learn from been on a support group like this. Wonderful

I wouldn’t be running at all if it wasn’t for this group. So much info and encouragement!!

When I was doing the program I used the podcasts as they included music and never crashed, the music isn't to everyone's liking but it was just noise for me.

I now listen to a couple of playlists I created on Spotify and have a great pair of Aftershokz so I can hear things going off around me as I jog along.

Joster profile image
JosterGraduate in reply toLeeU

I run with AirPods but need to get some aftershokz as the Cambridge Half doesn’t allow normal headphones.

LeeU profile image
LeeUGraduate in reply toJoster

Aftershokz are brilliant, I bought my wife a cheap clone pair off of Amazon for her to try before I bought mine, she uses the cheaper ones and is happy with those, I prefer mine but we can both listen to music and chat as we jog along.

I am looking for a cheaper version of Aftershokz, can you remember please which ones you got from Amazon? There seem to be a few in the 30/40 quid range which suits me as I probably will only use them for races.

How do I get that podcast you wrote about - as I would like to mix it up - at present I am listening to free Spotify with my own downloads songs.

Go here:

nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/c...

Click on the week you want, right-click the link and save it to your computer, phone, etc.

Like I said the music isn't to everyone's taste but ask anyone who's used the podcasts and they'll instantly say Julie, I'll leave it you to discover what I'm talking about.

The music has been put together by motivation specialists apparently, I can't knock them really as it got me through the program twice.

Lots of techie (to me anyway!) advice here gfl - hope you sort something soon. I thought I was doing well using my downloaded music on ‘shuffle’ but I realise now it has its limitations so I may be trying the Spotify option soon or, even more daring(😳), listening to a podcast - now that I’ve finally downloaded BBC Sounds!! Happy running!

I listen to BBC sounds sometimes. I'm enjoying running to the Strictly playlist at the moment. I also use podbean to download spoken word podcasts. Current favourites are No Such Thing As A Fish and Off Menu. Yesterday I listened to In Our Time on Middlemarch in preparation for the Radio 4 adaptation, but that's probably a bit niche.

I use the BBC Sounds pacesetter play list.

I run to Radio 4 but that's just me :)

The Archers omnibus is my favourite!

Oldgirlruns profile image
OldgirlrunsGraduate in reply toStoozie

Yes Stoozie, but these days it’s almost impossible to work out who’s speaking on The Archers - everyone sounds the same! And when did the youngsters all become so ‘hooray henry’? !! I’ve almost given up with it - after 40+ years😢!

Oh wow! Lots of choice out there. I'll start with music I think, but now I'm up to 28 minutes then podcasts make sense. Thanks everyone!

I ran for the first time yesterday without music at all. I found myself counting in fours (quite dull for 28 minutes!) and missed the music!! 🎧 🎵

I quite like running naked sometimes, especially on a sunny day

I thought you meant that literally then!

In this weather the brass monkeys are looking very worried :D

Sorry to jump on this thread and I’m probably gonna sound so stupid but I’ve never listened to music whilst running. I keep my phone on silent sitting on the treadmill and watch for when I should run/walk 🙈 I bought one of those arm band things for my phone so do I just get the music playing on Spotify then start my run on the app and the music fades out whilst the talking parts r on? Don’t want to be fumbling around trying to take the arm band off mid run to look at my phone haha!
