Nearly a month after graduating I've been religiously doing my 30 minute runs every other day - but nearly every time its felt like I can only just make make it and this has never meant running any greater distance than about 4.3k. This morning though, weirdly, as I reached the end of my thirty minutes I realised with some shock that I simply 'had some more in the tank'! I kept going in state of mild incredulity and I ended up running past 5k. I finally stopped at 5.3k thinking it was better to stop decisively at 1k more than my 'normal' runs rather than keep going till I kinda 'dropped'. I have always viewed a 30 min run for me as being at the limit of what was possible so it's very encouraging to see this previously impassible barrier fall away behind me. 10k has always seemed utterly ridiculous - but I can now just about imagine that it might one day be possible. Three months ago I was in the 'obese' BMI range and I would scowl at runners. Now I'm gloriously merely 'overweight' and give a thumbs up as I pass my sweaty jogger peers...

A month after graduation: First 5K!
Congratulations on your achievement you must be delighted, i too graduated just about a month ago and today I did my first 5k, I too am overweight and over 50, but finally managed it today. Iโve been running mostly for at least 30 minutes, 3 times a week but until today it just hasnโt quite happened.
Youโre obviously enjoying your running, and a run is a run what ever we manage. Well done to both of us ๐
Well done!! Very inspirational. I have the 5k in my sights so good to hear your experiences. Like you I have been doing 30 mins x 3 each week for a couple of weeks now. Iโve got a few more stone to lose (have been doing the FAST800) which is going really well and Iโm pretty focused atm for the sake of my health. Still canโt believe that I can now run.
Very well done! ๐๐
I did push for 5km yesterday morning but I paid for my arrogance by being sore today. (Getting better now.)
Congratulations on your first 5k itโs a great feeling isnโt it?
Well done to you on completing your first 5k, which is another milestone run and distance for any runner ๐๐พ ๐
That's fantastic! Now you have reached that milestone 5k won't feel so elusive and you will gradually find 5k runs your natural go to distance!
Fantastic news about the weight loss too. You must be thrilled!
Wow that's fantastic. Good to see that you are catching the running bug. Take it slow and I'm sure 10k will be in your grasp in the future if you want it, although 5K is a pretty impressive milestone on its own.
Happy running.
Superb job buddy. Keep up the great work
Fantastic Poddy! Thanks for posting this. Exactly the inspiration I need to get to 5k!
I recognise that map ๐. I am a bristol girl from Bedminster but don't live there now. Well done!!
