What is making you stop?

Everything going on in our lives can impact on our performance as a runner. Restedness, hydration and nutrition are at the top of my list of variables that need to be optimised to enable enjoyable running.

Thanks I think hydration definitely- it was hotter than I thought it would be! Going to go early Wed am when it’s cool! 🤞

Have you read this post which stresses the crucial, rather than optional, importance of hydration to runners?

Really helpful and makes perfect sense!

Thank you!

This is my next one, weather and tummy problems permitting. You did run 1, but what do you think is going wrong?

This is as much mental as physical.

I struggled, but managed it by putting the "extra minutes" first in my head, and then mentally restarting with the remaining minutes once they were done.

Your body is ready for this, just relax, go as slow as you can the goal is the time, the distance covered is irrelevant.

Good luck 😊

Definitely mental - I’ve done it once so I think it’s just the last hurdle. Going to go when it’s cooler too as I think I overheated! Thanks

Try a totally new route so you don't "know" how far you have still to go. I find that really helpful when I'm struggling a bit to hit a target. You can do it, and a practice run always helps! :-)

Good idea - it’s hard when you’ve come from ‘nothing’ to try and think differently! Thanks for the advice 🤞

You can do it, you know you can.

Maybe you don’t want to graduate (of course you do but hear me out) as you are worried about what next. Same reason I delay finishing a good book because I’ll feel lost without it. There is also consolidation and then if you feel up to it, Bridge to 10k.

Heat doesn’t help and lack of hydration is a pain. Whatever the reason is you can and will succeed 😍

This may sound a bit flippant (because at this stage the runs are all the same length), but maybe instead of redoing R2, go back and do R1 instead. You've already done it once, so you know you can...

Good luck though. You're nearly there and you absolutely can do this; just take each run slow and steady and if that means you end up covering less distance than you did in previous runs, that's absolutely fine - it's all about the 30 minutes.

Thanks I also think I’ve been going off a bit fast too and then just getting too tired . It’s quite a learning curve with lots to take into account, but I suppose that comes with experience.

I’m going to go out in the morning- making sure I’ve drank plenty today.

A lot of us forget, and I was as guilty as anyone, that it is a skill that has to be learned. It's so much more than putting one foot down in front of the other quickly. We see kids running around all the time and think "oh it's natural, I should be able to do it too" but the discipline to keep running continuously for longer and further, getting our breathing and pacing right, has to be learned.

The annoying thing is that even when we think we've cracked it and got it sussed, we can still get it completely wrong sometimes. I can pace myself to comfortably run half marathons (would not have believed that possible when I graduated C25k in May last year), pacing a 10k is generally no problem; give me a 5k/parkrun and all bets are off. It's almost as if I've forgotten how to run "shorter" distances...

I'm sure you'll do it tomorrow when it's cooler. I definitely find it harder to run in the heat. Take it slowly. 👍
