Miles for Refugees 2020

The news of a 16yr old Sudanese boy being found on the beach at Calais this week really upset me 😢 and reminded me that actions speak much louder than words.

Therefore, I’m seriously considering participating in the British Red Cross Miles for Refugees 2020 fundraising challenge 🤔

I’ve done a quick calculation and I can comfortably complete the 22 miles challenge (the length of the English Channel) alongside tackling the September Magic 10K plan.

Staring 4th September = 13 runs = 63.5K = 39 miles 😱

(The next challenge is the distance from Damascus to Beirut at 72 miles - I think that’s impossible for me at the moment!)

So, if I were to commit to running 🏃‍♂️ the distance and raising the £150 🎯 would anyone consider donating to this worthy cause?

In the first instance I need to raise £30 for the registration fee + running T-Shirt anyway so I’m scoping out potential support before I fully commit because funds are tight right now thanks to #Rona.

16 years old is no age to pass away whilst trying to find a better life free from oppression. I want to help in anyway I can at the moment 💪🏻

I agree with you about the tragedy of any life lost in such desperation, but it seems that the reports of him being sixteen were inaccurate. I have seen his real age as being 27..........not that it makes much difference.

Good luck with the challenge.

Was that in the daily mail? 😶

Funnily enough, I’m signed up to the 72 mile one... I didn’t fancy Izmir to Dubrovnik at 555 miles 🤣

I too have seen that the age was 27, still no age to go. Without getting into the political aspects of this, I think the people considering the boat option need to be put in touch with British consular services in Calais, or pop into the embassy in Paris on their way.

Anyways, enjoy the challenge... we got this... and good luck with the fundraising.

Amazing 😉

Personally, age is irrelevant to me and the bigger picture of the cause. Equally, without getting too political - the boat option appears to be their last option after exhausting all other avenues seeking support. The videos of what the French authorities have been doing to the camps in Calais is disturbing. Safe routes and support need to be a priority on both sides of the channel.

Anywho, I hope you enjoy the challenge too and all the best with your (longer!) run and fundraising goal 😉

It’s inline with my current running, in fact I should breeze it as I’ve just clocked up 70 miles for August this morning... HM plans do this 🤣. I’d probably make the Calais to London one, but the plan I’m running only shows the next 7 days at a time, and not sure if I’m going to get a recovery week to reduce the milage. I do love that they have a challenge for everyone though... not sure I know anyone going to 555 but one or two who will breeze the 285 Paris to London 😱
