Help to motivate 12 year old son on longer runs please!

Motivating 12 year old son on longer runs is proving difficult. We have just finished week 7 But on last 2 runs he had to walk for a minute or so after 20 minutes then could finish. Do we repeat a week do you think as he wants to carry on to week 8 but I’m not sure he’ll manage it( I haven’t said that too him). Any suggestions? I am managing ok but I used to run before I had him

I feel your pain. My 12yo gave up completely by w7r3 and to be honest I ran better as a result. He tells me he's done it on the treadmill but my 30 odd minutes without having to be Mr Motivator are so much more enjoyable!!!

We always recommend that any workout that is not fully completed should be repeated before moving on.

Are you both running at a pace at which you can speak clear ungasping sentences as you run? If not, you are going too fast.

Slowing down to the recommended easy conversational pace makes it more achievable and for most, more enjoyable and is in fact the best pace for developing endurance and stamina.

Yes running's slow pace but he finds it difficult to keep going not sure if it's mental or physical

Is he adequately rested, hydrated and fuelled prior to the run?

Keep him distracted by conversation.

What a lovely opportunity to spend quality time with your son.

Yes it's been a great bonding experience and I will make sure he's better hydrated beforehand thanks

Blackmail him £££

You can’t move on if you didn’t complete the run tbh
