Protein

Wee question about protein. As I'm new to running and protein etc, I just wanted to get some advice. I run first thing when I get up. When I get home, I've heard I need to have 21g of protein within half an hour of exercising to help repair my muscles. Thing is, I can't face eating meat first thing in the morning and eggs are a push too. Therefore, I was thinking of having shakes / protein bars. Have been on My Protein but unsure what powder to get. Can anyone advise please? I don't want to have too much protein and end up gaining weight!

At this stage...just eat healthily and normally...many folk if morning running head out with nothing. or maybe a drink...and eat when they get back...

I eat my breakfast an hour or so after my runs..this morning.. avocado on toast and a scrambled egg..!

Some folk have a banana or cereal.

If you are running in the day, just make sure you leave at least an hour or so before you run, depending on meal size.

If you have a healthy diet and are making sure you are well hydrated every day..just do what suits you.

There is some good info in the How to run, FAQ link for Newbies too !

I don’t think you really need to worry about it unless you’re running a half marathon or more. Just a balanced diet. 21g after a run is ridiculous for this distance.

I'd agree with others, at this stage I wouldn't worry about that. Rest days and hydration will help your body far more than protein shakes, especially if you have a balanced diet as well.

Thanks everyone. My friend had told me about the 21g protein, that's why I wanted to ask.

Nutrition advice like this from your friend just isn't relevant for a beginner doing C25K. Sorry!

PS. You're not 'new to protein' - without it, you wouldn't be alive.

PPS. I know you meant protein *supplement* or extra dietary protein ;-)

PPPS. Milk, nuts, cheese, yoghurt, liver pate, pulses, beans - there's all sorts.:

I run first thing in the morning and have my breakfast of porridge when I get back. I agree with all the others say.
