I felt OK with W8 R1 this morning (I know - I’m absolutely amazed) I could have carried on for just a little while longer but obediently stopped at the appropriate time. Is it OK to carry on if you feel OK or are you setting yourself up for something going awry later in the program if you don’t stick to the tried and tested plan ?

My mother started the plan when she was 67 and is still running 6 years later. She said she kept on running when she hit 28 mins and ran for the straight 30. I’m not sure if this is good advice but I’m presuming it’s ok as it’s only a couple of mins difference. Although I’m sure there’s others who’ll disagree. Anyway we’ll done for getting to 28 mins.
Great achievement. On a personal basis I used to add just a little bit on when I felt I could do it. I also am quite old (64). I must stress this is not what the plan recommends. The MOST important thing is to ensure to do static stretches post run for at least 20 mins. Also dynamic stretching before and I feel along with the walk at start and finish really helps. Good luck.
Thanks HG - agreed - I always do the stretches 😃just don’t want to do anything to jeopardise my progress when I’m doing so much better/more than I ever thought I could. I would be really fed up if I couldn’t get out for a while. Thanks for taking time to reply - It always helps me to hear from others
No, a plans a plan, this c25k has been devised by experts who know best, you should resist the urge to go on, surely you can wait a few more weeks and finish it properly..
Thank you - you’re right of course - I will continue to stick to the rules. I knew all along really didn’t I ? I stopped when I was supposed to this morning thank goodness
👏👏 well done - I did this run this am as well 😊. I’m defo sticking to the plan - I did feel I could’ve carried on a bit but on the other hand my legs were telling me they’d really had enough !
Super proud of myself though & you must be too 😁🏃♀️🏃♀️
Personally I would be pretty annoyed with myself if I got injured for the sake of not following this carefully developed, and tried and tested programme.
Absolutely right Jell6- It is my choice but good to get advice - seems the consensus is to stick to plan so that is now my choice/decision. Thanks for helping me make up my mind 😄
Oh my gosh - Thank you FG - didn’t think until you said it ... yes, just 5 to go to finish what I’m now calling “Phase 1” 😆 Stuck with it so far so will finish by sticking with the plan
The plan was created by a guy called Josh Park to help his mum start running. In an interview with the BBC he admitted hes not really a health expert and just wanted his mum to have a pain free introduction to running.
So a couple mins extra on the rare occasion isn't going to necessarily be a bad thing, if you know its well writhin you. It is important not to increase your time /distance too dramatically though as that is more likily to cause injuries.
Part of my goal in doing the plan at all was to stick to it to the letter and complete it. I'd been criticised in the past for not completing things or jumping ahead. I also learnt along the way the necessity of taking things slowly, allowing the body to adjust and learn progressively.
I did go too far post graduation and learnt the hard way what doing too much feels like but I did stick with it for the 9 weeks and there was a great deal of satisfaction in knowing I hadn't cheated along the way 😁👍🏻
Oh this is so familiar. I was all for starting at W2 when I was reading the plan. So glad I didn’t as I don’t think I would have reached W8. I’ll be a good girl and do as I’m told.
I agree with what's been said already - the plan works so stick with it. I also think that a minute or two extra is not a deal breaker but I've heard some folk going for a lot more than that and eventually end up with injuries as they keep adding too much. But its great that you feel you have more in the tank! Why not go flat out for the last couple of minutes? That way you feel like you're using up the excess fuel 😉😂😂
🤣Flat out!🤣. Can’t seem to speed up at all once I get into “my pace” - just feel like I could keep going but fear not - I’m sticking with the plan. Last thing I want is injury so thanks for the heads up.
Hi. I experienced the same on run 3 of week 8 and I kept running and managed the whole 5k. I say if it feels ok keep going as long as you don’t overdo it.
Of course you will. I’m no Usain Bolt and although Michael Johnson told me I was a runner, I’m not. I view myself as a steady jogger. 😀 but the main thing is building your stamina. It’s amazing how suddenly you feel able to keep running (or jogging )
I think it’s always worth sticking to the plan, remember it is building you, the last thing you want is to overdo it.
I know how you feel though because I felt the same on those last few runs, so I saved it all up for my final run and ran 5k even though i knew it would take me longer than half an hour 🙂
Hi, I started running last year aged 59. I was reasonably fit, but because I do so many other things (or did, before covid 🙁), I was determined not to get injured. Along with the advice on following the plan, I would add that rest days are very important. I always made a point of taking two. It took me a few extra weeks to graduate, but I did it with no injuries and I'm now a regular runner.
