So I've just got back from R2 wasnt dreading it despite knowing what to expect. My problem seems to be my knees, they hurt ☹ I'm guessing its due to the vast amount of extra weight I'm carrying, any advice (apart from losing 5 stones overnight 😂)

Well done for completing !

Oh, shame your knees hurt .

of course extra weight won't help .

I know as I used to have knee problems when walking ( a few years ago now)

So I wondered if it would be an issue with running , luckily, it hasent .

I'm around 2 stone lighter now though.

The other things of course could be your running style or your running shoes !

Do you have proper running shoes ?

And have you had a gait analysis done at a running shop ?

Both these things could have an effect on your knees .

I just have old trainers, I also run on grass which I hoped would help.

Someone else has referd to the gait issue maybe I should invest in some half decent foot wear

Thank you

I started off in old trainers also , but I would strongly advise when you start on some of the longer runs then decent well fitted running shoes would be advisable.and could well prevent injury 🙂👍🏃

I’ve been waiting for you to post! Oh I am so chuffed for you!

YOU did it! You must feel amazing... 🏃🏽‍♀️👏👏

(Oh if only we had a magic button to press for losing weight!.... my finger would be hovering over it right now! 🤣)

Seriously tho

there will be people a lot more knowledgeable than me re the knees.. I had a bit of knee pain initially.. probably more to do with the fact I had not done any exercise like this ...For some time

I took more than 1 rest day if they didn’t feel right and I also went and purchased some proper running shoes... I had a gait analysis and they recommend shoes that are supportive for ‘how’ you run..

I wanted to give myself the best chance and look after my knees... the shoes are fab!

When I booked I explained I was only on week 5 so not a runner (I wanted them to know what to expect).. I need not have worried.. they said 99% of the people the fit were same as me..

woohoo! I almost ran in that shop!!

Well done.. another step on your magical journey 👏👏

Thank you, yes I am pleased with myself. I wondered if R1 was a fluke, on a high from all the positive messages and whether I'd be able to still do R2 as well.

Weather was a bit windy but not enough to bother me. I'm trying not to think about W3, concentrate on competing this week for now 😁

Hi Feltip ,

Well done for completing your 5th run of the programme!

Sorry to hear about your knee pain - this is a common issue for runners. As mentioned below, your shoes could be playing a part in this. Also, bodyweight does contribute, however, this does not cause pain itself.

Often, knee pain is an indicator that the surrounding muscles and joints are being overworked or do not function as well as we'd like them to. It's important to remember that we are putting thousands of steps in when we run - with each step we experience roughly 3 times our bodyweight.

If you are somebody that isn't used to doing single leg exercises and/or if you're completely new to running, this is a whole new challenge for your body. Your body will adapt in time, but it's really beneficial to recognise pain early and try to understand what's contributing to it.

So, well done for recognising your pain, that's a really important first step. I'd be really keen to know at what point during or after your run that your knees started to hurt, and how that pain developed afterwards.

Look forward to hearing from you! :-)

Adam

Definitely try good shoes.

Just had my gait analysed And shoes fitted. Reduced my aches and pains no end would highly recommend. Also overweight already lost 2.5 stone and another 2 to go ... you’ll get there 😊
