Newbie 70 at Christmas!

Week3 Run 2 Completed tonight...

Week 1 run 1 I couldn’t run for 30seconds...

I was due to go early this morning but slept in, I feel totally exhausted all the time with this heat!

After needing to spend time in the garden today I dreaded having to put the run off but I made myself go out and it was ok.

Would love to do C25k for my 70th Birthday

I keep reading through and come across folk in their early 60’s but not many coming 70...

Pleased with tonight’s run /walk but I know it will get harder......so feeling a bit scared, although love the feel good feeling after tonight.

Welcome 😊

Nothing to be scared of, plenty of folk around that age on here, just take care of yourself as you go through the program and you’ll be absolutely fine 😊

Thank you!

Wow! you are fantastic! In my experience, the scared thing doesn't go away, but is more than compensated for by progressing through the programme! Good luck, I'm rooting for you!

Welcome to the forums. Have a read of the guide to the plan for many tips. healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

We did have an 83 year old start running on this plan... but there are many silent forum readers, so it may not be the oldest.

You can do this... enjoy your journey and come and tell us all about it lots.

Well done on what you've achieved so far! I clock up the big 70 in March next year and graduated afew weeks ago. Now running 5k+ three times a week, aiming to enjoy it (though that varies) and hit 5k in 35 mins (currently about 38 mins).

You should find it easier now things have cooled off a bit, but just stick at it and the plan will see you through!

in reply to Horatio77

Wow! What a story, well done...thank you, I really want to do this. I am inspired by what you have achieved...😊

Hi chrissie589, you can do it. Just do the time and forget the distance, that will come later when you are doing a regular 3 runs a week.

Go slow and if necessary even slower, this is not a race. Read up on pre run and post run exercises. Learn about posture, stride, and breathing. That helps with the muscles and tendons you haven't used probably for years.

You may think you are not improving but you will. Just be careful and you will stay injury free.

Just to add I started C25k Sept 2018 aged 75. Did the 9 weeks straight off then into weeks of consolidation. Early 2019 had a few mishaps that knocked me back 3-4 months, slow recovery. Now aged 77 I've just finished juju's plan 2 weeks ago doing the time. Week 8 ran for 60 mins. Now slowly preparing for a 10km.

Enjoy your runs good or bad, a run is a run.

Don’t feel scared, each run prepares you for the next and as we get older there is no shame in taking an extra day or two rest

Well done it’s a great thing to do

in reply to SueAppleRun

Thank you so much, it’s so lovely you have each other 😊

We are lucky but do run different speeds and amounts of time now, Willow is faster I run longer

Good luck and keep running g, the thing we found was slow down even more as the runs get longer then you will be able to keep going until the end, and suddenly we realised our longer slow run was faster than the early weeks, you progress naturally as you get stronger

in reply to SueAppleRun

Thank you...it will be interesting...😊

Fantastic well done for getting out there in this heat. It would be so easy to put a run off while the heat is zapping energy!

I have. Encouraged my Dad to start the programme. (He's not a poster lol) He is turning 70 this December and wants to improve his fitness. He's loving it. Age is just a number as they say 😊🏃‍♂️👍👏

in reply to Brunsamarathon

Thank you and well done for encouraging your dad... good luck to you both 😊

Thank you so much for all your good advice. Wow! Yours is a great story, it’s amazing what you’ve achieved, good luck 😊

You’re not alone , I started in January a month before my 69th birthday. Took me longer than 9wks and haven’t yet reached 5k but eventually managed 30m. It is hard but worth it and the support on this forum is amazing. As they all say , keep it slow and keep hydrated :) Good Luck 🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♀️👏

in reply to Buffy68

Thank you Buffy 68, you’ve done amazing. Wish I was in your shoes just now. I know it’s going to get hard but it’s knowing how much harder it’s going to get! Hey Ho! I’ll take your advice and keep it slow and keep hydrated. Very Well done to you though, I’d be more than happy to be exactly where you are just now and enjoy it 😊

I’m 70 next February and have just completed W8R1. I run very slowly- but that’s OK - and listen to some good music too - that helps. The program prepares you so well for the next run so no need to be afraid. 70 is the new 50 when you can run. Good luck

in reply to BirdersMum

Thank you so much for this...Look where YOU are, that’s amazing! Thank you for good advice and good luck 🏃🏻‍♀️

Week 4 Run 2 Completed

After a bit of a walking trek with family over a week ago I had a lump come up on my foot, think it was the walking boots! Foot is absolutely fine now...I’ve taken an extra day here and there anyway due to the high winds and all going ok.

Slight knee problem but it’s not stopping me from going out. Thinking I may have to get the peas out of the freezer, can anyone help is that what I should do?

Happy with the 5min runs, Think I’ll just make the most of this week before thinking too much about week 5, which certainly gets a lot of discussion.

Be interested if anyone has advice re knee, presumably exercises and stretches don’t go a miss as I tend to just get up and go! Naughty Naughty!

I didn't start c25k till I was 69.... Now 71 and managed a half marathon on my own in June. Age isn't necessarily a stopper... It's attitude that will carry you through..I can't run in the heat tho so I would suggest going very slowly indeed if you are hot...build it up very incrementally and slowly. We need more older runners to model aging well! Good luck.
