Hi,
Apologies for long post. I completed couch 25k last year and did really well running all year. Before Christmas I noticed a hard growth on the side of my knee. To cut a long story short urgent scans etc, progressing to MRI scan showed a meniscus tear with parameniscal cyst (which was the hard growth) and also moderate arthritis in my knee. Consultant said will need a knee replacement in next 5-10 years. I’m 38 😞.
This isn’t out of the blue, age 15 I had a meniscus repair, age 17 I had a meniscectomy. At that time I was told I would have about 10 years until I had problems, I’ve had 20!
So I haven’t ran since Xmas and really want to run again, I know I need to start couch25k again as a structured approach. Has anyone ran with arthritis or similar problems? Am I being detrimental to myself, or is being slimmer and healthier better on balance. I’m going to need a new knee no matter what so should I just run and have done with it??
To put into context I’m an Staff nurse on an Orthopaedic ward and know all about the surgery and recovery etc. It’s not surgery I am ever looking forward to having 😞😞.
If you have got this far thanks for reading and hopefully I will get some advice.
