Running Shoes: Hi I'm new to all this and am... - Couch to 5K
Running Shoes
This is such a hard question LadyDi because, as ever, what would suit me wouldn’t suit you. There are styles, sizes , cost factors to take into account - which you’ll already be aware of! There is a pinned post here on C25K where Iannoda Truffe has given a lot of useful stuff. The standard answer is ‘go to an independent running shop and get a gait analysis done’ - where they can see how you run and make recommendations that will suit you. Clearly that’s not an option just now so all you have is the internet. There are lots of makes but I think Brooks have a good returns policy which is something else to look at. Consider buying a size larger than you would normally do so that if your feel swell as you run, you won’t get blisters - I normally take a 7 but my running shoes are 7.5. Hope that helps a bit - it’s not easy!
Welcome to the forum.
This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5...
and includes advice on minimising impact, stretching after every run, hydration and strengthening exercises, all of which will help.
There is a link in the guide to a post about running shoes and another in that to a wet foot test, which in the absence of gait analysis is a good second best guide to your footstrike.
Enjoy your journey.
Hello, if your new to running I wouldn’t recommend buying really expensive shoes, as you may decide running isn’t for you (but hopefully you’ll enjoy it). I personally like the Nike epic reacts, however most of my runs are done on a treadmill, so I don’t know how they perform on trails as such. I’ve also herd that the Pegasus range from Nike is especially good aswell for good quality and a fair price.
It's a very individual thing. For example, I have a very high arch, so the last time I tried nikes they just didn't seem to work for me at all. Also, I prefer harder wearing shoes, as they tend to last longer than softer ones for me. Surface I'm running on also makes a difference, whether it is a light trail or a smooth road.
