Hi, I’ve been really proud of myself for really getting into running!!

However since middle of week 2 I’ve been really struggling with shin pain to the point now it’s becoming too much, I really don’t want to get out of my routine of running as I know I will lose the motivation and I am really enjoying it at the moment, has anyone got any tips for shin pain apart from slowing down as i already run at almost a walking pace 😂 I’ve ordered some enertor running insoles hoping they will help the impact as I only run on pavement but I’m not sure how well they will work - any tips are welcome 😄 also I have already had my gait assessed in a sports shop and paid and arm and a leg for some shoes

I also suffered from this, it might be shin splints? Make sure you have some supportive running shoes and also fully stretch before and after running. It might help to run on grass or softer surfaces if possible? Maybe give your legs a rest for a few days/ a week before going running again? This is just stuff I read online when I was suffering with the same problem x

Welcome to the forum and well done on your progress.

This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

and includes advice on minimising impact, stretching after every run, hydration and strengthening exercises, all of which will help.

Enjoy your journey.

Thank you! I’m going to run on grass from now on as I’ve been only running on pavement so that should make a difference as it is and I’ll give it a few days before continuing it’s just so disheartening when you get into it!! I just want to run all the time which is odd 😄 I’ve ordered some proper insoles to help with impact so I’ll keep updated on how they turn out... thanks for all the advice hopefully it’ll stop hurting soon

Sounds like shin splints - for which the cure is rest. ☹️I had them years ago and really rest is the only thing... But completely understand wanting to run all the time. I was on week 7 and got plantar fasciitis and had to take 2 weeks off to give my foot time to heal. I was so down and frustrated about it! Just getting back to it again now and trying to build back up to the longer runs. But my advice would be rest, and check your shoes are supporting you, and that you are not heel-striking. Good luck!

I had a similar problem with terrible shin pain in week 4 and 5 which has now gone and I just ran for 25 mins this week! 😁 Can't believe it after almost giving up in week 5! I also got insoles which I think made a huge difference. I decided to get some compression socks too and I researched exercises to strengthen my shins and calves. I made sure I drank plenty and did my pre run dynamic stretches which I also think really helps.

Hope you manage to see some improvements. Don't give up...if I can do it, anyone can!

Might invest in some compression socks as I think I’d be set then especially as I’m going to start running on softer surfaces and giving longer breaks in between runs - thanks for the tips 😄

I found compression socks (knee to ankle) really worked for shin splints, along with doing short quick steps.
