Looking for some motivation, I'm 44 and a half!! And want to get my mojo back... I was severely poorly and hospitalised 6 months ago with sepsis and pneumonia so I've not been able to do much exercise, but I'm ready to start...... slowly....
Little old me....: Looking for some motivation... - Couch to 5K
Little old me....
Hope youโre feeling better now? Iโm not very good at running and Iโm 47!! I started the C25K in January because I felt fat and grumpy at Christmas. I shouldโve finished it by now but Iโve been doing this at my pace and enjoying it. Good Luck ๐
Hi yes I'm feeling much better thank you. I'm just a little nervous getting back into full on exercise...I was off work for 4 months and spent some time in the ICU after major abdominal surgery....im still healing, so my fitness isn't what it use to be but I am determined to get it back. It's great that you are doing this a the pace for you...I just have to remember I have to take it easy....good luck to you too x
Well done on your recovery and determination.
The best thing you can do is to put your trainers on and get out there. Don't worry about following the plan exactly. Just brisk walking and breaking into a light jog every now and then will help. Hopefully, that will clear your head and get you into the right frame of mind. Then you can start using the app if that's what you want to do. But no pressure, take it at your own pace.
Best wishes
Slow is the correct way. The key to completing this is to start as slowly as you can possibly imagine yourself going, then slow down some more. You will discover hitherto unknown levels of slowness that you couldn't possibly imagine before you started this and if, along the way, you discover that you can run more slowly than your brisk walking pace, you've probably got it spot on.
Simple advice:
- Follow the plan, it builds you up in bite sized stages
- Hydrate everyday, not just on running days
- Always take rest days, this is not negotiable. You can do other exercise on "rest" days but absolutely no running. Your muscles, tendons and bones need time to recover.
- Extra rest days are good.
- Ignore the 9 Week thing. A "week" is just a convenient label for how long it takes you to successfully complete each set of three runs
-Similarly, don't fixate on 5k. Very few reach that distance at the end of the plan, it's all about getting to 30 minutes (and you CAN do that)
- Come back here for inspiration frequently.
- ENJOY IT
For context, I'm 49, started the programme in March last year and have gone on to run two half marathons; so be prepared for some changes (the least of which is that you lose all colour sense and will go out looking like some sort of day-glo rainbow).
Take care and stay safe.
Thank you. Great advice....love the idea of dayglo too!!! I love colour being a sunshine yellow colour energy!! โ๏ธ
Great advice from sTrongFuse there Lisad13 ๐
Glad to hear you're feeling better after your illness and are wanting to get stronger too!
Be careful though...this running lark is addictive! Before you know it you'll be browsing the internet for all things running related, clothes, shoes, accessories and the brighter the better ๐
Good luck, stay safe and keep posting! โค๏ธ

I'm known in work as little miss positive pants....ever the optimist.....so I'm looking forward to seeing what this can do for me.๐
Well this should work wonders for you then..
When do you start, miss positive pants?
Glad you are feeling better after everything that's happened, like our fellow runners have mentioned, take it nice easy at your pace. Start at Week 1 and take as much rest days that is comfortable for you. All the best, stay safe x
Well done lisad13 44 +1/2 that's sooooo young ๐ take it slow go at your pace that suits you no matter if you see others zipping along, you'll get there just remember the rest is as important as the run and drink that H20
Welcome to the forum and well done on your decision.
This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5...
44.5 times round the sun...........it is a number and signifies little else. That was two decades ago for me.
Enjoy your journey.
I am aware of an elderly gentleman who runs at my regular parkrun. He is recovering from Sepsis, and his times are slow compared to what they used to be, but he keeps going, slowly but surely, to build himself back up. So I have great hopes of you! Slow and steady is certainly the key.
BTW he is well loved and supported by all at PR, which shows what a great community it is.
Very proud of my little self....I actually got off the couch and did my first run this evening!! I even managed to get back just in time to applaud our NHS and key workers with all of my neighbours ๐
