Tried a short run this morning, after having broken ribs 3 weeks ago, and horrible virus. My head said go for it, but after 15 mins my ribs said no more. Just a frustrating ache, guess it needs a bit longer. How long off running before I have to start again. Getting frustrated with not being out there. Walking is not the same and you have to go so much further.

Well...I popped two ribs back in October 2016...
I trained on my elliptical as soon as the pain subsided...leg strength and stamina work...it was three weeks before I ventured out...my legs were really strong and my stamina was good...
Also did the NHS exercises for broken and bruised ribs, religiously

Just a matter of trial and hopefully, not much error... just try shorter runs.. softer ground.
Did you get checked pit when you popped your ribs... to make sure there was nothing at issue... ?
I didn't get checked at first as thought it was bruising. After 2 days of driving 60 miles to meetings, couldn't stand the pAin so did. Result - broken ribs and no more driving. Nothing more, painkillers and rest required. Following this with the proper flu virus and a cough. Going to take things steady.

Ouch poor you. Everyone is different, listen to your body. Aim for short runs and work up as pain allows.
