W1 r1 ....... again, one year on.

I started c25k exactly 1 year ago today with the goal of starting a weekly park run once I’d completed it, at 52 my goal is pretty much not fitness, more sort of don’t die too young :). Last year I got to w8 and unfortunately a long term lower back injury returned, I gave up for a few months and returned sporadically but always seemed to have a few back niggles, went to see a physio who’s just told me to restart but listen to my back, and take it easy, more walking less running, and try just 2 runs per week initially. So just returned from gym ( doing it on a treadmill for now ), feel great, just hope my back holds out this time.

Goal is the same, to start weekly park run, can’t wait :)

Thanks, me too, just got to keep an eye on it and if I feel a few twinges to lay off for a few days, thanks for the encouragement- it really helps having a forum like this 👍🙂

Thanks, I think trying to get it all done in the 9 weeks last time was too much

It can be done but after I did it I did over 40 consolidation runs .

Good to know, I became too regimented about it last time and even though I felt a back twinge i still went running and aggravated it which was the start of all the hassle

I fitted the runs in as and when I could always having at least a day if not more between each run. Took it very slowly, drank as much fluids as I could tolerate and ate bananas two or three a day for the potassium. I wanted to complete C25K before my 58th birthday and that week I had 5 runs in 10 days. I also started on Monday 7th Jan 2019 and finished on 10th March 2019. I told my mum in the hospice on that day as I had spent nearly four days and three nights in the hospice doing my last two runs whilst she was in there. My mum passed three hours after I told her I had graduated.

It’s nice that you completed her and told her, so sorry to hear about your mum. This is all good advice which I’ll take on board, thank you.

Hope your back holds out. I’m glad I read your post as I too have recently developed a sore back (sciatica maybe, never had it this long or bad before) and was going to do my run today anyway, but maybe should lay off for a few more days having read your posts. Good luck with continuing and take it easy!

I too get sciatica, ironically If I don’t exercise I’ll develop a sore lower back, however if I run too often It’s clearly too much impact for my lower back so this time I’m not goin to run as often and see how it goes, sciatica can be horrible, if it gets really bad get yourself a TENS machine from your chemist they are usually only about £20, it was the only time I managed to get relief from sciatica

I started in July! Finished today. Taking extra rest days (I usually only get out twice a week) has worked for me. Haven’t felt under pressure and have avoided being sore.

That’s good to know, i think maybe 3 time’s per week was too much impact and eventually it caught up with me, I think sub consciously I’m thinking that I’ll aim for twice per week

Hi Jurgen. I had a few niggles with my back too. Found drinking a pint of water before a run and after has help a bit....as papillon has ssuggested.also had some gentle massages.
